Formentera markets

Selling handmade crafts, local products, and secondhand finds, Formentera's markets offer a great island experience.

The markets on Formentera may be smaller and more intimate than those on Ibiza, but they are still a great way to discover handmade crafts and many second-hand treasures. From the established artisan market at La Mola to the evening stalls of Es Pujols and the year-round second-hand market in San Francisco, there's plenty to browse beyond the island's pretty villages and beautiful beaches.

The island's official artisan markets run mainly from May to October, with stalls selling artwork, clothing, jewellery and household items, and even local products made in workshops on Formentera, such as baskets, espadrilles, paintings and textiles.

Please note that all times mentioned below might be subject to change, please confirm on this official Formentera website.

La Mola craft market

La Mola's artisan market - located at the southernmost tip of the island - is the island's main artisan market in terms of skilled craftspeople and visitor numbers. Established in 1984, it remains popular with locals and holidaymakers, and is an essential Formentera experience. Expect ceramics, carved wood, silver, stone, glass, textiles, leather and artwork, with the emphasis firmly on handmade pieces produced by artists and craftspeople based on the island.

The market occupies the central square in Pilar de la Mola, where live music usually accompanies the browsing, and neighbouring bars offer somewhere to stop for a drink.

Where: Pilar de la Mola
When: Wednesdays and Sundays, from 16:00 to 22:00, from 1 May to 12 October

San Francisco market

The island's capital, San Francisco (Sant Francesc), is home to several markets. The island hosts a crafts and art market during the summer season, and the second-hand market is a treasure trove for those who enjoy rummaging for pre-loved goods.

Antoni Tur Gabrielet craft centre

This is less of a traditional hippy market and more of a local craft and food centre, but it's worth including because it offers something different. The Antoni Tur Gabrielet centre (also in San Francisco) combines an exhibition space and workshops dedicated to recovering traditional local crafts. It's a great place to pick up a pair of espadrilles. There is also a farmers' market selling Formentera produce such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, and locally produced honey.

Winter months, open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 9:00 to 14:00

San Fernando craft and art markets

San Fernando has perhaps the strongest connection with Formentera's bohemian past. In the 1970s, the village became a meeting point for hippies and artists around the legendary Fonda Pepe, and something of that free-spirited character remains in its summer markets.

The San Fernando craft market focuses on handmade work, while the neighbouring art market gives painters and other artists a place to exhibit work inspired by the island. The atmosphere becomes particularly lively on Saturdays, when there is live music.

Where: San Fernando (Sant Ferran)
When: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, from 20:00 to 24:00, from the end of May to the end of September

Es Pujols market

For a more conventional holiday-market experience, Es Pujols has around 40+ stalls along its seafront, making it an easy browse after a day on the beach or before dinner. Expect jewellery, clothing, accessories, crafts, and other holiday finds.

Where: Es Pujols seafront
When: daily, from 19:00 to 24:00, from 1 May to 30 October

La Savina market

At the island's port, La Savina, the market is another convenient place to browse stalls while arriving on or leaving Formentera. As the yachts bob just behind, you can search for the latest fashions and island wear, including dresses, jewellery and handmade designs.

Where: La Savina
When: daily, from 10:00 to 24:00, from 23 May to 30 September
