Sa Caleta: an Ibiza family tradition since 1988

A family-run favourite where fresh seafood, local produce and long lunches have kept diners returning for decades.

Set above the tiny cove from which it takes its name, Sa Caleta is the kind of restaurant where lunch has a habit of stretching well into the afternoon. Families, holidaymakers and island residents gather around its tables for seafood, rice dishes and the easy-going atmosphere of a traditional Ibizan seaside restaurant.

Family-run since 1988, it has spent almost four decades establishing itself on the island's culinary landscape. That longevity shows in its relaxed, unpretentious character and the mix of loyal local customers and visitors who return year after year.

It is also reflected in a close-knit, long-established team whose familiarity with the restaurant – and with many of its regulars – gives the place the easy confidence of somewhere that knows exactly what it is.

There are several distinct dining areas, from the front terrace overlooking the cove to an elevated deck with views across the bay towards Formentera.

Inside, nautical décor and fishing memorabilia reflect the restaurant's long connection with the sea.

The lovely shaded garden beneath mature Sabina and pine trees offers welcome respite from the heat.

Fresh fish and seafood are at the heart of the menu, complemented by vegetables, herbs and seasonal ingredients from Can Puvil, the family's own organic farm.

The signature Paella Sa Caleta is a particular highlight, generously laden with grouper, monkfish, John Dory, red prawns, cuttlefish and shellfish, with deeply savoury rice drawing its richness from a well-made seafood stock.

There is nothing showy about Sa Caleta, and that's very much the point. This is somewhere to settle in, order something from the sea and embrace that most Spanish of pleasures: letting lunch drift naturally into sobremesa.

No dinner at Sa Caleta is truly complete unless rounded off with a Café Caleta, the restaurant's signature digestif and a tradition born right here in the 1950s. Local fishermen created the warming blend of coffee, brandy, dark rum, citrus peel and cinnamon to fend off the chill before heading out to sea or while repairing their nets.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a meal at Sa Caleta is a true Ibiza experience. Combine it with a visit to the nearby museum and interpretation centre and make it into a full day's outing.
