Clubbing out of season | Partying in Ibiza over Halloween

No one night of the year captures the imagination of Ibiza residents quite like Halloween!

When it comes the world famous super-clubs, partying in Ibiza has a very defined cut-off point. After a flurry of closing parties in mid-October, that's it. Well, at least for a few weeks... that's because we get a reprieve at the end of the month.

A week's break to down tools and recuperate after a long summer slog is rudely interrupted for Halloween. After working since late April, here's a chance for island residents to let our hair down and enjoy ourselves. It's like one big pay-off for all the hours put in over the last six months.

Islanders go all out for Halloween. It's one of the most creative times of the year. Of course, there are still a few tourists around, making the most of cheap out-of-season getaways - they're invited too. Here's a round-up of the best parties taking place.

Supernova | Las Dalias & Akasha

16: 00 - 05:00,
31 October, San Carlos (near Santa Eulalia)

Las Dalias' regular Saturday fixture Supernova goes spooky for a Halloween edition.

This is the final time this year Supernova begins outside in the garden (it flips to Las Dalias Café at the start of November). As usual, all ages are welcome to attend for the outdoor action, so this is a family affair until 22:00 when we move inside to adult-only Akasha club.

Across both spaces, the line-up is built around the recurring faces who soundtrack Las Dalias and Akasha week-in, week-out. Musically, you're in very safe hands. Nobody knows this crowd better.

Line-up: (A-Z) Audera, Igor Marijuan, Oriol Calvo, Santiago Garcia, Shadeh & Sena, Words Of Niō

Circus of Terror | Pikes Ibiza

21:00 - late,

Inside Pikes' twisted big top, you'll find yourself surrounded by fiends and freaks, where outlandish characters, human oddities and peculiar performers bring a sense of macabre mischief to proceedings.

Expect spooky spectacles, creepy clowns, suitably strange goings-on and a killer soundtrack, courtesy of a top-secret line-up that will only be revealed once you've entered the lion's den.

If you haven't already sorted your ticket for this, then forget about it! Halloween at Pikes always sells out in record time. As always, all profits go towards supporting locally-based charitable projects.

TIMEmACHINE | EsBirra Ibiza

23:00 - 04:00,
31 October, Es Cana

EsBirra Ibiza's vinyl-only TIMEmACHINE is one of the island's best kept secrets. With a totally reasonable €10 entry payable on the door only, it feels like such a steal for the standard of music you're getting, totally slaying the notion that partying in Ibiza is "too expensive"!

At Halloween, Cocoon favourite Dana Ruh headlines with support from duo Los Suruba. One for the underground heads who live and breathe the culture - and strictly no VIP.

Line-up: (A-Z) Dana Ruh, Los Suruba, Malambo

Nido - Día de Muertos | Las Dalias & Akasha

12:00 - 03:00,
1 November, San Carlos (near Santa Eulalia)

Taking inspiration from the Mexican holiday of the same name, Nido's Día de Muertos celebrates and pays respect to those who have passed, but done so in a humorous, as opposed to a morbid, way with face-painting, the giving of sweets and dancing part of the ritual.

The skull is particularly symbolic and fancy dress is often focused around this trope, so if you need inspiration, you know the angle. Similar rules apply as with Supernova: under 18s welcome for the garden until 20:00 and then 18+ inside Akasha afterwards.

Don't wake the dead, invite them to dance instead!

Line-up (A-Z) Alfonso Ares, Irenee S, LIEBE, Panyer, Shadeh & Sena

Making an effort

While some parties insist on mandatory fancy dress as the terms of admission, the rest highly encourage participation. That means, you are going to have to swallow your pride, show some humility and put in a bit of effort (yeah, we're looking at you, Mister I'm So Cool And Balearic!)

Trust us, people in Ibiza go all-out at Halloween and let their creative juices flow with their costumes. It's just the done thing.

If anything, you'll look like the odd-one-out if you turn up without fancy dress! Don't be that guy.

Getting here

So far, so good. However, with the smooth comes the not-so-smooth. Understandably, flying here outside of tourist season doesn't have the same number of routes as during summer and yet there's still plenty of choice.

Currently, there are direct flights throughout the week operating from major European cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Geneva, Hamburg, Munich, Paris Orly, Salzburg, Stuttgart plus daily flights from London City.

Depending on where you're travelling from, you may have to consider a route via connecting flight. That can seem like an extra hassle, but take it from somebody who does it frequently, it's fairly effortless and reliable when coming via either Palma on Mallorca or Barcelona El Prat.

Madrid, Valencia and Alicante are three further options.

Right now, there are some real bargains to be had if you move quickly. At time of publishing, Ryanair has one-way flights from/to Barcelona from under €15 over Halloween weekend, although we expect the price to creep up the closer we get.

You shouldn't dismiss alternative modes of transport either. For many, coming by ferry is one of the most romantic ways to arrive - and more environmentally friendly. Imagine docking at Ibiza Port just as the sun is rising. It's magical.

There are daily sailings to/from Barcelona, Valencia and Denía on the mainland, serviced by Baleària, Trasmapi and GNV.

Where to stay

While you might instinctively go to search for Playa d'en Bossa as you do for your summer visits, we'll stop you right there. Bossa is a summer-only resort. In fact, anybody who's driven through it as early as mid-October will tell you, it's already a ghost town by that point.

San Antonio has a general population and remains fairly lively, particular at weekends, up to the Three Kings holiday in early January. Plus you still get some great sunsets at this time of year. While that's one option, by contrast San Antonio Bay will feel very quiet with only a limited number of locally-favoured bars open. For that reason, you might want to consider elsewhere.

Generally, though, Ibiza Town makes a more attractive proposition with the amenities immediately available at your disposal. Of course, ultimately, it all boils down to your personal preference of base - and the areas you are likely to explore outward.

If money is no expense and you desire some luxury, two options at the higher end are The Standard and Pacha Hotel (pictured above). The latter has the benefit of giving guests inclusive admission to boutique club Pachacha across the road on Friday and Saturday nights, meaning you don't pay extra for admission.

Conveniently located between the bay of Talamanca and Marina Botafoc, the Art Deco designed Ocean Drive Ibiza is also open all year round. Nearby, Hotel Simbad Ibiza (pictured above) is a four-star property with exceptional views of the historic Old Town, Dalt Vila.

Where to eat

Compared to summer, there's a little less choice for eating out as a few businesses start their holidays as soon as the main tourist season ends. The good news is that we can promise you will still have a wide choice. The majority of Ibiza's best restaurants are open for business.

In addition, there are several establishments which go the extra mile on Halloween, to offer dining experiences which are really unique!

In Ibiza Town, The Amorous Project (pictured above) celebrates with an '80s and '90s themed murder mystery game and Italian cuisine set-menu.

Priced at €45 per person (excluding drinks), it includes appetisers, a main course, a second course and dessert. Flashback: Murder Mystery Masquerade is available to groups of five or more and masks are provided.

ROTO (pictured above) in Ibiza Marina has its own frightening dinner and dance experience called CIRCUS ROTO. Fear, pleasure and music intertwine for one terrifying evening by the port. Eerie circus characters come to life as the boundaries between fantasy and reality blur.

After dinner, the party continues with DJs playing music until late. Booking highly recommended.

Further up the coast, CBbC Marina Sta Eulalia (pictured below) transforms into the perfect setting for a special Halloween event by the sea. The deal consists of a carefully crafted menu again priced at €45 per person, including a welcome cocktail, starter, main course and dessert. Drinks are not included.

On the road to San José, Cas Costas Grill opens six days a week, providing entertainment on selected evenings.

Budget options include Ibiza Town's Daruma and its excellent ramen dishes, ideal for warming you up on cooler evenings. All the places favoured by residents, such as Es Tancó pizzeria, Rita's Cantina, Bar Anita, Madagascar café and Croissant Show will be open as usual.

You can discover more all-year-round restaurant recommendations on this page.

Other activities

The Sunset Strip may be completely closed down at this time of year, but old favourite Golden Buddha remains open at the Caló des Moro end. A little further north at Cap Negret, Hostal La Torre is open with daily sunset DJ sessions. Booking is strongly advised.

On the east side, The Standard's ground-level Jara bar and restaurant offers an entertainment programme throughout the cooler months, which includes Sunday roast dinners, bingo and Jazz nights.

As for specific Halloween-orientated events, interactive botanical garden and education centre BiBo Park (pictured above, near San Rafael), is holding children's workshops for ages five to eight between 10:30 and 12:30 on 31 October.

For €40 they can carve their own pumpkin and receive snacks and a drink.

From 15:30 until 20:00 in Santa Gertrudis, there is Halloween face-painting at Stevie alla Bottega Il Buco - prices dependant on age and style.

These are just a few examples of many activities happening over this period. You will find markets, hikes and other community-based and cultural events taking place. If you'd like to learn more about what's going on, please visit our events calendar.

What to expect from the weather

Daytime temperatures can still be gorgeous at this time of year. Yes, that includes beach time at, what you'll discover are, far emptier playas than during summer - an absolute dream. As for the sea temperature, well, it's only marginally cooler than August. Get yourself in there!

What's less predictable to guess is the chance of rain. Although there is a likelihood of showers, you'd still be very unfortunate for it to affect a run of days or even the majority of a single day.

However, you will definitely need to bring a jacket and a couple of pullovers for when evening falls, when you do notice a drop in temperature.
