Marking this year's Black History Month, [UNVRS] resident Carl Cox has unveiled a remix of Say It Loud – I'm Black and I’m Proud by one of the all-time greats, James Brown.
Released on Friday 6 February, the rework pays tribute to one of the most socio-politically significant songs in modern music history, while reintroducing its message to a new generation of clubbers.
Originally released in 1968, written by Brown alongside his bandleader Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, Say It Loud arrived at the height of the US civil rights movement. Its call-and-response chorus quickly became an unofficial anthem of the Black Power movement, symbolising pride, identity and collective strength within Black communities across America and around the world.
Given a new lease of life, Cox’s remix fuses a driving four-on-the-floor beat with a tight, bouncy bassline beneath Brown’s unmistakable vocals and groove, walking the line between reverence and reinvention.
On the release Cox stated, "Remixing Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud isn't about the past - it's about keeping the fire alive. James Brown laid the foundation, the rhythm, the message, the pride. His legacy still moves dancefloors and minds worldwide.
This is respect to the Godfather, to Black History and to the power of music that unites us all."
The release will also include additional versions designed for both club play and historical context, pairing contemporary remixes with original and archival material.
You can catch Coxy every Sunday at [UNVRS] this summer, from 21 June to 4 October.
