Sounds like: a romantic soul, trapped inside a bionic body, yearning to embrace his lost humanity

Anyma

Arguably, not only the biggest name in Melodic Techno, but the driving force behind the genre’s relentless rise, Anyma is back with his latest album. The End of Genesys is the third and final entry in the decorated trilogy. It has landed at an exciting time.

This past winter, Anyma was the star attraction of an incredible groundbreaking residency at the world's most advanced musical space, the Las Vegas Sphere - the first of any electronic music act to do so.

It served as the perfect backdrop for such a technologically involved artist, who has described his stage persona as a hybrid "simultaneously coexisting in digital and physical realms." His ambitions did not end there.

More recently, he has been handed the keys to Tuesday nights at the newest high-tech club of the realm. A boundary-pushing eight week peak-season residency at [UNVRS] - the new massive super-club jewel in Ibiza’s party capital crown.

In many ways, these atmospheric conditions are optimum for releasing a new album.

Album review

Anyma's music has always aimed straight for the prefrontal cortex of emotions. It is often seeped in romantism, while other times being melancholic or unnerving.

Comprised of 15 tracks, The End of Genesys covers multiple facets of Anyma's musical identity. There are darker and dancefloor oriented tracks, introspective numbers and even interludes of stripped back electronica.

Opening track Fortuna is one of those. The profound chakra opening track paves the way for the rest of the album. Along with Angel In The Dark, it is the most understated and meditative piece of the collection.

Atmosphere embraces the spectacle for which Anyma and his shows are increasingly associated - vast venues aided by gawp-inducing visuals that modern audiences go delirious for.

For us, the top three tracks that are most capable of igniting the dancefloor are Voices In My Head, Taratata and the title track, The End of Genesys.

The first is a collaboration between Anyma, Argy and Son of Son and has all the hallmarks of an instant classic that invokes the Trance feeling of old: catchy melody and lyrics that sum up how many clubbers would feel on a night out.

Listen to this at night and sleeping is the last thing on your mind. The allure of the dancefloor is calling…

Taratata is a cool link-up with divisive Alt-Pop icon Grimes (other guest artists to feature, include Ellie Goulding and Luke Steele from Empire of the Sun). Psytrance-style bass, catchy hook and cryptic lyrics full passion for something now lost.

This is one of those tracks that would make you postpone a bar break. All of a sudden, there is Taratata and nothing else. We suspect we'll be hearing everywhere very soon.

The End of Genesy starts with a female chant that gradually becomes more distorted and less human. The track sounds like an internal battlefield with a conscience torn between its organic and artificial personalities. It's a track you are likely to recognise from the proliferation of videos recorded at Anyma’s shows and uploaded to the ether, featuring the CGI humanoid.

Sharp blades of edgy electronic sounds reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's soundtrack from Blade Runner 2049, make us the central character of this sci-fi adventure. Once the bass kicks in, we are teleported to a rave set in a distant dystopian future.

A special mention is reserved for Entropy, perhaps the most bad ass track of the entire album - a heavy machine with an indomitable bassline. You can definitely detect notes of influence from Milleri’s adopted Berlin hometown.

With The End of Genesys, Anyma once again invites listeners to travel in his more intimate world.

The album represents a milestone in his artistic pursuit. There might be something for everyone - a symptom of his increasing popularity among the masses, but it is still unmistakably a product of one of electronic music's modern auteurs.
