Formentera moves towards plastic-free future

New plan aims to phase out single-use plastics.

A new certification is being rolled out in Formentera to help businesses, especially in the hotel and restaurant sector, to reduce and eliminate single-use plastics, which will delight eco-aware travellers everywhere.

Formentera Sense Plástic or “Plastic Free Formentera” comes as part of a bigger initiative, that covers both Formentera and Ibiza.

From 2021, a ban on single-use plastics will come into place for the Balearic islands for the most polluting items such as straws, glasses, plates, cutlery and coffee pods. A goal of reaching complete elimination within three years is planned.

As Mikel Gabarain, Formentera Sense Plàstic coordinator states: “We invite all companies to respond to this call for action and open the way to a Formentera and Ibiza free of plastics by 2023”.

A star rating will help businesses to show consumers what they are doing to tackle the issue of rising levels of plastic, with each venue gaining a certificate showing how many stars it has.

To get a one-star rating, each participating business commits to el¡minating three items of single-use plastic. Two stars are gained for a pledge to achieve 50% total elimination, rising to 100% for three stars.

Many hotel and restaurant businesses have already reached a two-star rating, meaning total eradication becomes a much shorter step for many businesses on Formentera.

With people visiting the Balearic islands for their idyllic natural beauty, a ban of this type is key in helping to preserve the natural environment for the future and for future generations of inhabitants and visitors.
