The small resort of Cala Llonga is located halfway between Santa Eulalia and Ibiza Town, offering a quiet oasis for a relaxing holiday as well as easy access to both towns and their many attractions.
Though small with a quiet, familiar atmosphere, the resort offers a good choice of restaurants and hotels and all the shopping facilities you might need for a holiday. So you don't have to venture further, but it would be a shame to miss Ibiza Town, where excellent boutiques and fine dining awaits, not to mention the grand old town, and Santa Eulalia with its elegant yacht harbour.
Cala Llonga is especially popular with families as the water of the sheltered bay is very safe and there are lots of moderately priced bars and restaurants, so that the costs do not get completely out of hand. However, couples also enjoy the tranquility and beautiful nature and the easy access to the rest of the island.
Thanks to a number of first-class hotels with excellent gourmet restaurants, discerning holidaymakers have also discovered this little gem on the east coast.
The beach
The gorgeous beach of Cala Llonga, one of Ibiza's biggest, is a huge arc of golden sands. It allows plenty of room for everyone. At the front there are several rows of sunbeds and parasols as well as enough space to spread out your towel in the sand. To the rear of the beach there is lots of free space where you can enjoy beach games without disturbing anyone.
There is a lovely playground right on the sand - and parents can enjoy a drink in the beach bar right next to it. The beach is lined by a nice promenade with more bars and restaurants.
Shopping
Although there aren't as many shops in Cala Llonga as there are in other resorts, there is still everything you could need. There are supermarkets, some boutiques and souvenir shops which also offer beach accessories and fashion.
During the summer season, each Thursday evening there is a small market taking place on the promenade, with a selection of stalls selling handicraft products, quality fashion, accessories, jewellery and other beautiful gifts for you to take home.
Activities
If teasing your toes in the sand as you relax isn't quite enough to keep you occupied, there are pedalos and other water sports available. If you fancy staying dry, try your hand at beach volleyball, for which there is plenty of space on the golden sands.
The only golf course of Ibiza is nearby, only 5 minutes by car. Furthermore, there are excursions by boat or tourist train and other interesting things to do nearby.
Cala Llonga market
Each Thursday from May to October there is a small market happening in the evening hours, along the beach promenade. The stands offer fashion, accessories and other interesting souvenirs, often hand-made, in excellent quality. Later in the evening, live music complements the lovely atmosphere.
Fiestas
In the height of summer, in August, the resort celebrates the the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with the Cala Llonga Fiesta. In the days around the big day on 15 August there is a varied programme of events for all ages, with concerts and parties, open-air cinema on the beach, a sand castle competition and much more.
The end of September, which marks the end of the season, Ibiza celebrates Tourist Day as a big 'thank you' to all visitors to the island, for choosing it as their holiday destination. In Cala Llonga this is celebrated with a concert at the beach and other activities - find the programme at the tourism information pavilion right behind the beach.
Accommodation
Cala Llonga might be one of the smaller resorts of the island, but it offers a very good choice of hotels and apartments for all tastes and budgets.
There are luxury hotels with fantastic views over the bay and beach, newly renovated in recent years, adults-only options as well as budget apartments, most of them only a few steps away from the beautiful beach.
In the green hills surrounding the resort there are also many holiday villas to be found - enjoy your own private pool and lots of privacy.
Nightlife
If clubbing is still your thing, Cala Llonga isn't a lost cause as it is not far from some of the best clubs on the island. Nonetheless, you would have to get there by taxi or hired car, as there are no transport links at night.
At night, most of the local entertainment happens in the bars and hotels, for example with live-music or DJ sessions.
Restaurants
Cala Llonga offers a good choice of bars and restaurants, many right on the beach or the promenade running along it. Or enjoy panoramic views from one of the luxury hotels above the bay; their restaurants are mostly open to the public.
You'll also find excellent restaurants in the beautiful surroundings, for example, the neighbouring small beach of Sol d'en Serra, or at the nearby Ibiza golf course.
Getting around
If you wish to explore further afield, you can do so with a hired car, by bus or by hopping on the small tourist train.
Local ferries transport you along the impressive coast of the island to Ibiza Town, Santa Eulalia and the Punta Arabí hippy market in Es Caná. Also well worth a day out is a trip to Formentera - the Santa Eulalia Ferry makes a stop in Cala Llonga before taking you to Ibiza's beautiful sister island.
