Album of the week: Dance Spirit 'The Sun Also Rises'

Sultry, harmonious and a little melancholy, Dance Spirit has produced an evocative debut LP.

Artist: Dance Spirit
Album: The Sun Also Rises
Label: Supernature
Release date: 2/3/15

Californian duo Dance Spirit creates music according to "a philosophy based on attaining subconscious harmony" through elements such as rhythm, melody, and movement. Produced by Barcelona-London based label, Supernature Records, renowned for delivering quality music from all around the world, this LP meets that standard and then some. Dance Spirit takes us on a highly emotional musical journey, collaborating with artists including Shawni, Jay Tripwire, Jon Charnis, and Nikko Gibler, and incorporating an array of live instruments from the trumpet to the xylophone; these instruments lift the album beautifully.

Recorded only on Sundays, either well-rested or straight from Saturday night's party, Dance Spirit spent eight months producing what has become a brilliant expression of themselves through music. As a listener, it's easy to become surrounded and wholly encompassed by this album. The ambience it creates is one of connectedness, and it feels at once sultry and passionate. The twelve tracks work together to build a cohesive experience - one that exudes atmosphere whilst maintaining complexity.

Lucid Love, Satellite featuring Jon Charnis, and Lamentation featuring Jay tripwire stand out as the tracks that would work fantastically on the dance floor. A bit deeper, these show Dance Spirit's attention to what people want to hear at a party while still keeping in mind that emotional sensuality. Departed and Undressed featuring Shawni are two favourites that deserve an honourable mention. Departed is mellow, but nowhere near inadequate. It's multilayered, beautifully constructed, and alludes to a certain weightlessness, whilst Undressed radiates lustful, provocative vibes. Shawni's vocals paired with the sounds of trumpeter Gabe Steiner make it nearly impossible to listen only once.

Using music as a means through which to communicate with the world, Dance Spirit's LP is not to be missed. 'The Sun Also Rises' is a quality sampling of their impressive talent and range of capabilities, suggesting an exciting future.
