Once upon a time, there was Cocoon: the biggest - in fact, the first and only - Techno party to ever grace Ibiza. It is so embedded in the party culture of the island, that creator Sven Väth's reputation transcends the clubbing world.
Needless to say, we didn't need any further encouragement to attend its glorious comeback for the 2026 season. The spot chosen for the first party of summer is one the coolest outdoor locations on the island, 528 Ibiza.
When we arrive, Papa Sven is already banging on the console of the amphitheatre-like Garden Stage - the first time he has graced this particular zone of the sprawling venue.
Our arrival coincides with golden hour in full effect with the sky changing several different hues of orange. Even the air itself takes on an otherworldly quality. The atmosphere at this time of day in an open-air setting on Ibiza is something else. Words can never do it justice.
You feel like you are in the right place at the right time. It's life affirming.
Sunset, nature and pounding Techno - what more could a lifelong committed clubber want?
The dancefloor is filled with the children of Cocoon - lifers who have devoutly followed the party since its ignition at Amnesia in 1999. It is not exclusively the preserve of the old. Young people are present too, but it is clear this is a more mature affair with all the riches that come with it.
Similarly, the music is a mix between the old and the new: tracks taken from the '90s and 2000s, all the way to new releases - many of them carved into Cocoon's history. Naturally, the Hardspace mix of L'Esperanza is a memorable moment. The track evokes the '90s rave era.
However, it's the appropriately titled Call Of The Void and its pulsating hypnotism that leaves the biggest impression.
The music is top drawer, the dancefloor is having a great time and moving in the open air, surrounded by nature is something else, which adds an intoxicating sensation of freedom to the experience. It's pure Ibiza.
Picking vinyl sleeves and blowing kisses, Sven is a true rock star. The legendary German DJ is a genuine immortal in the Rolling Stone mould. Long after he leaves this mortal coil, his legacy will live on. The true spirit of the dance.
He is not limited to the role of solely a DJ, but is very much a part of the show. His fingerprints are all over Cocoon.
Long before this beset of VIP culture, posers and social media clout-chasing, there was Sven, having wild parties in the booth, motivating the crowds like no other DJ and enjoying himself just as much as the people he was there to entertain. In that respect, nothing has changed.
Prematurely in a lot of ways, the music outside stops at 23:00, so that the island can rest.
No problem. We are shepherded to a staircase at the back of 528 and advance to the terrace. At the top, an entrance leads into a nocturnal wonderland for the next stage of the day-to-night format.
The music inside is more hypnotic, deeper and sexy, leaning away from the pulsating warp!warp! we were treated to earlier in the day. Isolee's Love Algorithm is one of his selections typical of this period of the night.
We pop backstage and catch Sven to say a quick hello and shake his hand, but before long we are back on our dancing feet. We continue to dance the night away in the packed Teatro, until the bittersweet moment to say goodbye and disperse into the darkness.
Cocoon never disappoints. It can change house, it can switch the day of the week, but it refuses to fade away. The cultural and social movement put in motion by Papa Sven many years ago, still has momentum - and doesn't look like running out of steam anytime soon.
On the contrary, with the passing of time, it manages to keep evolving into something new without ever sacrificing on the principles it holds dear.
This party is ingrained in the musical fabric of the island - a reference point that defines what Ibiza's club scene is about. Once again and forever more, totally unmissable.
