Ibiza's New Conservatory of Music

The new Conservatory of Music was finally inaugurated yesterday

Ibiza's new Conservatory of Music was inaugurated yesterday by the politicans who have financed its consruction and will pay for its running. It's a five storey structure - described as vanguardist - in the shape of a letter L and the letter U. It combines ultra modern features with some decidedly ancient ones, as you'll see later.......

Three tiers of government were represented at the ceremony; Francesc Antich, President of the Balearic Government, Xico Tarres, head the Ibiza Island Consell and Lurdes Costa, Mayoress of Ibiza town.

The new building in the Avenida Espana cost over €6 million and will house all facets of music study in Ibiza and Formentera with a concert hall, and teaching areas for 240 students along with 25 members of staff.

An interesting feature of the Conservatory are the archaeological remains from the Punic/Roman period - the whole area is littered with them - which where uncovered whilst excavating the foundations and are now preserved on the lower floor for all to see.
