If you've yet to experience BBC Radio 1 Dance weekend on Ibiza, you're in for a treat.
Each summer, it's one of the biggest multi-day happenings in the Ibiza calendar. Dance music fans of every generation come together for a Friday to Monday packed with R1 Dance residents and special guest DJs.
With the main event taking place at 528 Ibiza again this year, Friday 31 July sees the broadcasting powerhouse return to the Benimussa Hills. Artists like Josh Baker, Disclosure, Gorgon City, Jazzy and more are all confirmed to be in attendance, with surprises also in store.
Having completed this fiesta for several consecutive years, I've learnt a couple of things that make the day a whole lot easier. Here's how you can not only survive, but thrive BBC Radio 1 Dance weekend.
Tips & tricks
- Drink more water than you think you need
It sounds boring and obvious in equal measure, but trust me.
528 Ibiza is an absolutely stunning location, but it gets hot. You're out in the sun for most of the day, dancing non-stop. Before you know it, you've forgotten to drink any fluid (other than alcohol). A certified recipe for heat stroke, if you ask me!
Think back to the World Cup just a few weeks ago, where hydration breaks were mandatory. The same applies here. Besides, it’ll alleviate the symptoms of a sore head in the morning. Water breaks are your friend!
- No need to pay-out for a taxi
One of the best things about this party is the free shuttle bus. Use it and save money.
As much as we love 528, boy, can that taxi queue build up fast. This will save you waiting around trying to flag down a taxi with thousands of other people at the end of the night. It's one less thing to worry about before you start sinking drinks.
The bus departs and returns to the bus station in San Antonio on a continuous loop, leaving at regular intervals. Just have your ticket on your smartphone to flash the driver as you're boarding.
- Keep tabs on your mates
We've all done it. You turn around for five seconds and suddenly your whole group has disappeared into the mixer.
Before you head in, agree on a meeting point if anyone gets separated and make sure everyone's phone has charge. Power packs become a lifesaver at this point. It'll save a lot of unnecessary aggro when your favourite DJ is on and your bladders haven't quite synced up!
- Please, get some sleep - Zzzzzzz
I know, it's Ibiza. Temptation lies around every corner and it's too easier to roll in from one party and head straight out to another. We get it. You're here to have fun. Honestly, you'll enjoy the day so much more if you've had a few hours sleep and eaten something healthy prior.
The day is long, the temperature balmy and the crowds busy. Plus, the line-up deserves your full attention.
- It's not all about the headliners...
The headliners might grab all the attention, but Radio 1 is what it is because of its resident DJs. From Pete Tong to Danny Howard, Sarah Story to Arielle Free, some of my favourite sets over the years have been from R1's on-air talents themselves.
- Arrive early and beat the queues
Getting there early means you’ll get to experience all of the incredible artists on the roster. Check out upcoming DJs like Cam Stockman, Selena Faider and Lu.re all playing earlier in the day, before the venue is completely rammo.
Have the dancefloor to yourself! Get in early, have a wander around to get your bearings and soak it all up. You'll even have ample time to get a selfie in front of the 528 sign!
- Explore the new indoor stage
One of the difference this year compared to previous, is the introduction of an indoor stage (the other being the outdoor Garden Stage).
Not only is it another excuse to try someone new, but it's also the perfect place to cool off when the sun gets a bit too intense. Dip inside for a few sets and see how many different DJs you can tick-off.
- Pace yourself
It's easy to get carried away when the music's this good, but remember you've got a full day ahead of you. Take five minutes in the shade every now and then and don't feel like you need to be front-left for every single set.
Sometimes the best moments come when you're just taking it all in from afar.

Radio 1 weekend is one of Ibiza's biggest dates every year for a reason. Leaving it until the last minute is asking for trouble. Sort it now and thank yourself later.
