Ibiza Cathedral Race

One of Ibiza's New Year's Eve traditions is the 2000 metre race

One of Ibiza's New Year's Eve traditions is the 2000 metre race to the Cathedral at the summit of Dalt Vila. The 28th annual race a few days ago had a record entry of 302 participants at its start in the Paseo Marítimo when perfect running conditions prevailed.

The two favourites to win, Samuel Urbano and Sara Cardona, had both triumphed before, in 2000 and 2003 respectively, and duly lived up to expectations this year. Urbano crossed the line after 7 mins 44 secs, just a few metres in front of second placed Darío Ferrer, and Cardona won the ladies section with a time of 8 mins 28 secs.

It's a good natured affair and these days many of the participants compete in full fancy dress – it is New Year after all!
