Along with the rest of Spain there has been an amnesty in Ibiza for foreigners who are here illegally to regularise their situation and become legally registered immigrants. During the 3 months of the amnesty 3661 people presented themselves to the authorities to complete this procedure.
The benefits for them are that they enjoy a legal status here with work permits and can obtain proper contracts of employment, pay social security, and thus receive proper health care and so on.
The immigrants are mostly poor people from poor countries who work in menial jobs in construction, domestic service and bars and restaurants. Over 55 nationalities were represented during the amnesty but the vast majority of the illegal immigrants came from just 3 countries, Ecuador, Morocco and Rumania.
And it's not just the immigrants who are happy, the Social Security are ecstatic because they reckon they'll receive over €10 million in extra contributions from the employers.
