Police sources estimate that in the tiny municipality of Ibiza town, the smallest in Spain, with its 11 kilometres of road, over 80,000 cars are jammed onto the tarmac at its busiest time in summer.

Compare this with the 25,000 that are on the roads on the entire island in January, and it's plain to see the difference. The police also say that on busy fiesta days, for example the town's San Cyriac fireworks display on August 8th, over 100,000 motors will be competing for space.

The worst time of the day is between seven and nine in the evening when local people are on their way home from work and the tourists are leaving the beaches and going out to dinner. And the police opinion? 'There's too much traffic!'
