The small village of San Mateo, surrounded by fertile earth ideal for harvesting wine, is home to one of the most interesting annual festivals on the island: the Festa des Vi Pagès (country wine festival), which marks the culmination of the process of making Ibizan wine, the famous "vi pagès" (country wine).
Every year in mid-December, the Association of Neighbours of Sant Mateu and the Town Hall organise this popular event which invites local wine producers (mostly local families) to participate with their productions of the year. Visitors can taste the different wines and vote for the one they like best.
Apart from the traditional wine tasting, there is usually live music, traditional dances (ball pagès) and tasting of the delicious Ibizan sausages, sobrassada and botifarra, as there are several bonfires where you can grill your delicious menu.
