SPTL156: Sonny Fodera

A fine Australian representative of their dance music scene, making big waves on the island of Ibiza during the 2013 season. Meet Sonny Fodera.

The Mix

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"Some of the tracks I have been playing this summer, some un-released and some that are already out."

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"I recorded the mix in my studio in London."

What are the musical influences that have allowed you to arrive at this podcast?

"I am really loving all the stuff from Cajual, Defected and Hot Creations. Some of my favorite producers are Cajmere, Jamie Jones, Dennis Ferrer, Dusky, Huxley, Santos, Sante, Darius Sarroysian... too many too name!"

The Plug

What is keeping you busy at the moment? I see you're busy on the production front...

"Yes, been really busy!"

"I have had a lot of gigs this summer, been really flat out on that side of things while trying to stay busy in the studio. I have upcoming releases on Cajual, DFTD, Defected & my label Beatdown. I have set up a studio out in Ibiza too! So been trying to spend a lot of time in there while in the ocean."

You're playing across the island a lot this season, where might we catch you?

"DC10 for Paradise on September 4th with Cajmere, Ushuaiah Towers for DFTD, Booom! for Defected, Ocean Beach for Soul Heaven and Eden."

How long ago did you move over from Australia? Why did you make the move, what were you expecting?

"I moved away from Australia in February to tour the US then landed in Ibiza early May. I am only in Ibiza for the summer then I I move to London for the winter. I did a season in Ibiza in 2010 and loved it! Ibiza is amazing, so many producers, DJs and promoters coming together. It's like WMC or ADE for 5 months straight. You meet so many great contacts here, and some of the parties are very special, experiences that will last forever."

Just to talk about the Australian dance scene for a moment. It seems relatively fresh to an outsider, do you think it is strong enough to support all of the new emerging talent? I see a lot of artists have to travel abroad to work, perhaps like yourself?

"The Australian dance scene is awesome! It is just so far away from the rest of the world, especially the US, Europe. So it can be a bit limiting at times with touring, such long flights. Musically in Melbourne and Sydney it is defiantly popping! I still plan to move back there at some stage, it is such an amazing place. There is a lot happening and some awesome artists emerging."

Over the last two years I've noticed an influx of Australian travelers on the island, growing year by year, I guess this must show a fair amount of commitment to the scene, Australia isn't exactly a short flight on Ryanair for them...

"Ha! Not at all, I think it takes about 24 hours at least of flying to get to Ibiza. That is a lot of dedication. To be honest I haven't really met many Australians on the island - more Italians, Spanish, German and English people."

Aside from the parties over the season, what keeps you on the island?

"The beaches, tapas and sangria!"

Finally, you have a weekend off. What do you do? Where do you go?

"Formentera! Hire a scooter and explore, and do some snorkeling."
