New old club to open – Penelope now one of the Balearic People

The popular and well-regarded production Balearic People has jumped Privilege's ship. We got on the blower to BP main man Juan Medrano to ask why.

The popular and well-regarded production Balearic People has struck a deal with Penelope, a Spanish club chain. They'll be back in their old Saturday night slot this year. We got on the blower to BP main man Juan Medrano to ask him why he jumped Privilege's ship.

If you’d had the pleasure, you would know that Balearic People in its previous incarnation was a fine display of Spanish pride and positive prejudice. Who else would stop the pounding house beat in the cavernous main room to play flamenco records to accompany a jaw-dropping display sensuous dancing? Balearic People always put its trust in the best of local djs and performers, and were repaid with lashings of love.

The new owners of the 2,000 capacity venue on Paseo Maritimo (the same road as El Divino) in Ibiza Town sensibly approached Señor Medrano’s and partner Señor Julian's organisation when they were looking for a high profile promoter for their Saturday slot, a popular night for Spanish crowds.

The old club was apparently famous for having a slide into the dance floor and although Medrano couldn’t confirm its reappearance he did say Penelope would be "big time glamorous".

Medrano: "The people that took it are very rich people and they know what they’re doing. Big, big guys from Ibiza are very much involved. Probably not this year because they just opened, but next year they gonna do a 3,000 capacity venue."

Why did you move?

The owner of Privilege José María has been fighting with us, and we thought 'Ok no more'. So I left last year. Balearic People was the second best party there by far and now he doesn’t have it. And now we doing Saturdays at the new venue and we do something smaller, more glamorous, more exciting. I think it’s going to be very nice.

- Penelope is scheduled to open on June 24

- Balearic People will open on Saturday July 2 and finish on September 17. Unless of course they’re raking it in, in which case they’ll keep on trucking for sure

- look out for Balearic People involvement in other "huge" concepts with "mega artists", in conjunction with the town hall
