Review: Nanking Chinese Restaurant

Nanking, established Chinese restaurant in Ibiza Town welcomes you to dinner.

Nanking is the well-established and well situated Chinese restaurant, tucked between Ibiza Port and Dalt Vila, on Carrer del Mar. Whilst easy to find and quite an enjoyable stroll from any direction, do be aware the restaurant is first floor positioned with steep stairs for access. This is not a restaurant for those with mobility challenges.

Walking into the restaurant, there's a lovely warmth to the décor. A smiling Charles (waiter) greeted us and we were shown to our table.

Nanking has been a popular restaurant within the Spanish community for eons and herein is something that British diners need to be aware of. The Spanish palate is traditionally different from the English, insomuch as the Spanish are not overtly fond of strong, spicy or chilli based flavours. The meal throughout was representative of this. If you are partial to mild flavours, Nanking will delight you. If you're partial to a sensory kick, add the chilli oil and your taste buds will be hotter than a set of Formula One tyres on the 50th lap.

The wine list is extensive and I smiled to see Sangria con Vino (verses Sangria con Cava) – not something I am accustomed to seeing on a Chinese menu. This was requested and was an excellent choice – light, refreshing and somehow reminiscent of Christmas mulled wine, except chilled.

The service was blisteringly fast and efficient but also personal. Our two waiters for the night were Daniel and Charles. Both knew their roles but were unfailing polite and attentive, a very real credit to the establishment.

With our English palates, my guest and myself were most impressed with the “3 delicias Chow Mein” (mix of meats). Portions across all three courses were huge and the dessert menu alone reflected nineteen dishes and was translated into six languages!

Nanking opens at 8.30pm and by 10pm, almost every table was booked with cheerful groups from the Spanish community – something to be aware of if you're looking to eat later in the evening. Reservations advised!

Without drinks, our three course meal, was approximately 22 per head (Chinese bread, Lamb curry with egg friend rice and a shared dessert of Truffles and cream – remembering portion size is huge)

In a comfortable restaurant setting with excellent service this overall struck me as good value.
