March in Ibiza

It may be Lent, but one thing we have given up on Ibiza in March is fiestas. San Jose makes up the hat-trick of fiestas this year following San Antonio in January and Santa Eulalia in February.

The action in San Jose takes place in the open air around the church square and has only come a cropper once in the recent past because of the weather when poor old Paco Fernandez (photo) was rained off just after he'd started.

We've no official programme as yet but I predict that it'll be similar to past years with some good bands from the mainland performing in the festivities, Flower Power of course, and a top band at the San Pepe rock fest in the football ground.

San Jose day is March 19th, which is also celebrated in Valencia and known as the Fallas. Here in Ibiza the Valencian community burn their fallas in San Antonio – usually the Saturday following the 19th – to the accompaniment of much paella and partying.

More food's on offer in San Antonio as the Pintxa tapas route is still going strong and over in Santa Eulalia they've got their own GastroJueves half price food scheme going on all month.

If you like to pick your own veg, the fields of Ibiza have lots of wild asparagus ready for harvesting in March. Here's my tip – be sure to wear your gardening armour, it's a really spiky plant!

Enjoy!
