Ibiza's Easter Processions 2011

Easter is celebrated in Ibiza with a series of solemn processions in Santa Eulalia and Ibiza town

Easter is celebrated in Ibiza with a series of solemn processions in Santa Eulalia and Ibiza town where hundreds of people belonging to various 'brotherhoods' take part and thousands watch as sacred statues are borne around the towns. The men carrying the Saints wear high pointed hoods which cover their faces, because the carrying is a big honour, which should be done anonymously.

In Santa Eulalia the first procession happens on Holy Thursday, 21st April from the Chapel of Lourdes in the town centre to the church, high on the hill near the entrance of the town which starts at 21.00 h.

On Good Friday there's another procession at 10.00 h from the market to the church with an enactment of the stations of the cross, a concert in the town hall square at 12.00 h, and at 20.00 h the main procession from the church to the Chapel of Lourdes. Finally, there's a procession on Easter Sunday from the town hall to the church, starting at 9.30 h.

In Ibiza town there are many smaller acts of reverence by the various brotherhoods which take place in their parishes, but the main procession is on Good Friday at 20.30 h from the cathedral down to the Vara de Rey, when the streets of the old town Dalt Vila are thronged with people as our video shows.
