Mal del Cap Festival highlights Ibiza’s low-season renaissance

A three-month programme of cutting-edge contemporary art.

Looking for ways to banish the winter blues while broadening your cultural horizons? Look no further than Mal del Cap Festival – Narratives Mal Dites, an avant-garde multidisciplinary event that runs from January to March. It offers three months of free, avant garde programming featuring literature, poetry, cinema, and humour, with the emphasis on new narratives. Given fresh impetus by young local talent, this dynamic event typifies the island’s more authentic, creative side - one that is far from its peak-season persona.

The festival opens on 14 January at Sa Cultural with the irreverent comic and literary artist Juarma, who will be presenting his book ‘Poética de la autodestrucción’.

The programme continues at iconic venues across the island, including a poetry recital at the legendary Can Jordi Blues Station (on the Ibiza - San José Road) on 22 January, featuring emerging voices Jessica Ferrer and award-winning poet Paloma Chen. A philosophical delve into comedy follows on 29 January with Julián Génisson's presentation ‘Deshacer el ridículo’.

Cinema takes centre stage on 30 January at the Can Jeroni cultural centre in the town of San José with a screening of ‘Balearic’, followed by a discussion with director Ion de Sosa. The month continues with stand-up comedy on the 6th, starring Xavi Daura and local talent Cristina Ramón.

The festival culminates in March with a number of major highlights: a joint comedy show by Ignatius Farray and Irene Minovas at Can Ventosa auditorium (Ibiza Town’s main cultural centre) on 15 March, a youth-focused short film section from 18-20 March, and the official short film selection on 20 March.

The grand closing celebration on 21 March features concerts by Animals Marins, the iconic duo Hidrogenesse, and a DJ set by Mmmeel.

"We wanted to show that Ibiza is much more than high season," states the Mal del Cap team. "We fill three quiet months with culture, humour, and storytelling. If you were looking for a reason to visit the island outside summer, this is it."

The festival is supported by key local institutions and businesses committed to enriching Ibiza's cultural landscape in winter.
