Editorial: Never be too proud to change your mind

#004. Musings from the dancefloor.

Admit it. We've all been there. Whether it be with a partner, employer or social group, at some point, we've all had to skulk back with our tail between our legs and confess we've changed our mind. Add a "former-" prefix to any of those examples, for an extra serving of humble pie.

In the moment, it can be a dent to the ego.

But, (and here comes a pleasantly positive truth bomb) there's no need to feel shame, dear reader. Despite what you might think, performing a U-turn is almost always a good thing. Humility is liberating. This week's lesson is never be too proud to change your mind.

Never be too proud to change your mind

Take scene champion and all-around professional Joseph Capriati, for example. Last summer, he rocked the clubbing world by leaving Amnesia and switching allegiance to Hï Ibiza in a move that nobody could have envisioned.

He was one of an exodus of talent. To a certain degree, the departures of Paradise and elrow were expected. The former had started life at DC10 anyway, while the latter had reached a glass ceiling, as far as what it could achieve at the club after six wholly successful seasons there.

But Capriati? That one must have stung.

Capriati's affinity with Amnesia's dancefloor is no secret

He was the heir apparent to the Amnesia throne. A DJ who is stitched into the fabric of the club. For many, you can't usher "Amnesia" without immediately thinking of Capriati. So, yeah, when the murmurs first started circulating, even the biggest cynics were blindsided.

International nightlife is a funny business, though. Just twelve months later, and you could be forgiven for wondering whether the whole thing was a dream, J.R. Ewing style (and if you get that reference, you are at least as old as I am).

Last week, Amnesia announced the sensational homecoming of JC, and suddenly all feels balanced in the universe again.

Who reached out to whom, we might never know, but few can argue that Capriati and Amnesia belong together. Since this is a very special year, being the club's fiftieth anniversary, we are thrilled that any misalignment in their individual visions has been left in the past.

No doubt there was a degree of sheepishness, perhaps even embarrassment on one side or both. More often than not, the blame-game is a fool's errand. It's much more productive to look at the bigger picture and practise the misunderstood art of forgiveness.

Changing your mind isn't a weakness. Rather, steadfastly refusing to change your mind in the light of new circumstances - that's the real weakness.

Maintaining his reputation as one of the gentlemen of the scene, Capriati departs Hï Ibiza with grace and decorum. Glancing back to last October's DJ Awards, J.Cap had nothing but positivity to say about his experiences at Hï Ibiza during his acceptance speech for Best Tech House act.

Before his return to Amnesia, he makes one last appearance at Hï Ibiza, as a part of its 26 April Opening Party. And, in that, we learn another of life's truths: never burn your bridges.

Always leave the door open, because who knows what the future might hold? I could take an educated guess, but as this current Ibiza off-season window has shown us, the only thing predictable about life is its unpredictability.

Capriati goes one way, and East End Dubs goes the other. Not only do Metamorfosi and Eastenderz trade places, but they now go head-to-head to battle it out for Tech House dominance on Tuesdays. For neutrals or "hanging voters", it presents an interesting dynamic.

East End Dubs exited summer 2025 as one of its undeniable success stories, so Hï Ibiza won't be feeling too dejected by Capriati's fleeting stay. In the end, both clubs get their man and you can't say fairer than that. In EED, Hï has secured a ready-made replacement targeting a slightly younger demographic, perhaps. The battlelines have been drawn.

With Pacha yet to show its hand, but working fastidiously in the background, Tuesdays could once again become one of the biggest nights of the week. They might even rise to the levels of 2016-18, when it was, arguably, the most competitive of the seven.

Ibiza has a very strong Friday to Monday programme, as well you might know. But our strength as a party destination is being able to offer world-class events seven days a week. Therefore, having this wealth of choice midweek is what sets us apart from the alternatives on offer.

Nobody does it like Ibiza.

Call me stubborn, but that's something I feel I'm unlikely to change my position on anytime soon.
