The popular pastime of trotting races has been put on hold for 20 days because of a virulent airborne disease which affects horses, known as horse flu.

This is a precautionary measure because as yet no case of the disease, which has affected up to 500 horses in Mallorca and Menorca, has been found in Ibiza.

However a horse which had arrived from Menorca to take part in the traditional May festivities showed symptoms of the flu and so the decision was taken to place an embargo on the transfer of the animals to and from the island.
