Ibiza's ultramodern Ushuaia Beach Hotel is in the news for three very different reasons

Ibiza's ultramodern Ushuaia Beach Hotel is in the news for three very different reasons this week. First there's a new exhibition of modern furniture art, called Laminart, by architect and sculptor Jorge Goval. Featuring pieces for use indoors or out, the furniture – made entirely from material by Du Pont – has beautiful sweeping curves which would enhance any of Ibiza's many minimalist villas.

Staying in the 21st century, guests at Ushuaia will be issued with a hi-tech piece of kit when they arrive. It's a bracelet with a microchip which allows the wearer to connect with social networking internet sites without the aid of a mobile phone or computer. With just a little more than waving their hands in the air, guests can post photos, geotag themselves and 'check-in' at their places.

There'll be more waving their hands in the air when the whole hotel travels back in time to the 70's and 80's next week when two of that era's most popular and successful bands visit. Though operating in different 'genres' both Kool and the Gang and The Human League have similar histories, enjoying critical acclaim as a funk band and underground electronic outfit respectively, before becoming megastars of the 80's pop scene.

Kool and the Gang appear on 7th August and Phil and the girls on the 8th and I can guarantee that you're all singing 'don't you want me baby' now!
