Every year in summer the tinder dry pine forests which still cover around 50% of the island have an extremely high fire risk. To help prevent fires the whole of the Balearic Islands have a law that no fires should be lit in rural areas from the beginning of May until the middle of October.

With the deadline approaching on Sunday, Ibiza's country folk are busy burning agricultural and garden waste whilst they can, a method they've used for hundreds of years.

With last year's fire at Benirras still fresh in people's minds the authorities in Ibiza ask that all visitors in summer take extra care because something as small as a carelessly thrown cigarette or a spark from a barbecue can start a major fire.

Just over a week ago 70 hectares of woodland near Capdepera in Mallorca was destroyed in a fire, which highlights how dry the countryside is already after a relatively rain-free spring.
