In 1999, Norman Skinner - always fascinated by new technology and among the first to recognise the internet's potential - was exploring how Ibiza Spotlight could make the leap online. A chance meeting that year brought together Norman's vision and the technical know-how needed to launch the website. That developer was James Ledden, the co-founder of ibiza-spotlight.com.

Working from early morning to late at night, the two of them set about creating the website. Bit by bit, the team expanded to incorporate James’ wife the multilingual Steffi, photographer/designer Pete Young and marketing expert KT Uhlig - all of whom are still here today.
When the website launched, online booking was still in its infancy. Most visitors continued to rely on package holidays sold through tour operators and travel agents, while entering credit card details online remained unfamiliar for many.
Hotels were among the first to recognise the potential of this new channel. Ibiza Spotlight proved an effective and cost-efficient way to reach visitors directly, connecting accommodation providers with travellers.

When local hoteliers received their first direct bookings through Ibiza Spotlight - some were so overjoyed they even received their first guests with bouquets of flowers.
But just as things began to pick up, the dot-com crash took place, taking with it many early digital ventures. In spite of this, Ibiza Spotlight continued to develop its offering, consolidating its position as the online travel market matured and consumer confidence gradually returned.
As stability returned, the website continued to grow. Accommodation listings were joined by ticket sales, excursions, club entries, restaurant recommendations and increasingly detailed destination guides.
What had begun as a digital version of the printed guide was becoming something far more ambitious. More and more people began organising their holidays through the site, trusting it as both a guide and booking platform.

The 1990's were the boom years for the clubbing industry in Ibiza, cemeting its status as the party capital of the world.
Between 2000 and 2020, Ibiza Spotlight entered one of its most defining phases of expansion, evolving from a holiday planning platform into a marketplace for the island’s nightlife and accommodation sectors.
A key shift came in 2001 with the creation of the famous Ibiza Spotlight Party Calendar. At the time, detailed club listings were still largely the preserve of niche print titles such as Mixmag and DJ Mag, catering primarily to dedicated clubbers. Ibiza Spotlight changed that dynamic by centralising the island’s nightlife into a single, continuously updated online resource.

For the first time, clubbers could plan their party manoeuvers in advance before arriving on the island.
To this day, the Ibiza Spotlight Party Calendar remains the world's number one resource for up to the minute data on who is playing on the island and where.

The early 2000s saw the rise of the superclub era, with increasingly ambitious productions and a surge in club tourism. Over time, the focus shifted towards superstar DJs and branded nights, with the island becoming a global stage for new music, trends and headline residencies.
By 2006, Ibiza Spotlight was handling ticket sales for venues including Space, with the Space Opening Party proving an immediate success and setting the tone for future collaborations.
This breakthrough opened the door to major UK promoters, including Cream, Renaissance, Ministry of Sound and Manumission, all of whom came on board as the platform cemented its position within Ibiza’s clubbing ecosystem.
As demand grew, so did coverage. What began as a listings page evolved into a comprehensive music magazine and party guide, supported by increasingly detailed editorial output and dedicated nightlife writers.

The next major expansion came in 2007 with Ibiza’s licensed villa rental market. At the time, only around 70–80 properties on the island were properly licensed, making the sector highly niche and tightly regulated. Ibiza Spotlight again bridged the gap between supply and demand, offering villa owners a direct route to a targeted audience of independent travellers.
As both nightlife and villa sectors expanded, so did the team. New writers, contributors and interns were brought in to support the growing editorial and commercial workload, reflecting the platform’s shift from guidebook origins to a multi-layered digital operation.
By the end of the decade, Ibiza Spotlight had become firmly embedded in the island’s tourism infrastructure - not simply reporting on Ibiza’s evolution, but actively helping shape how visitors experienced it.
Recognition followed. In 2010, BBCi recommended Ibiza Spotlight, noting: “From resort guides and accommodation to the notorious nightlife, this site makes sure nothing is left uncovered.”

It marked a clear evolution from its origins as a printed guide with hand-drawn maps. Yet the purpose remained unchanged: helping visitors experience Ibiza in the most informed and rewarding way possible.
Then, in 2020, the island fell silent...
