Visitors get around these idyllic Mediterranean islands by public bus, rental car, taxi and, why not, hitchhiking. But nothing can compare to the sensation of riding a scooter along their winding country roads, the sea flashing between bends and the landscape unfolding before you: pure freedom!
Hiring a scooter in Ibiza or Formentera is both affordable and practical. Compact, agile and easy to park, they allow riders to slip along coastal routes, pause at hidden coves and move between villages without the limitations of larger vehicles. It’s a straightforward way to link beach days, inland restaurants and spontaneous detours into one flowing itinerary.
The islands' road networks reward confident, attentive riding. Many routes twist through pine-covered hills before opening onto sudden sea views, with sharp bends, uneven surfaces and the occasional stretch of loose gravel demanding steady control. Conditions change quickly, particularly in rural areas, so staying alert is essential, especially in peak summer traffic when the island is at its busiest.
Although the majority of scooters are powered by small 50cc engines, it is possible, and recommendable, to hire a 125cc machine if you are the holder of a full car driving licence. The extra power and larger wheels can be valuable on Ibiza and Formentera, especially when dealing with uneven, sandy roads or taking a passenger.
However, if you are not a habitual and experinced rider in your normal life, it is NOT a good idea to take a passenger at all - it is much much safer option to rent one scooter each.
For visitors from the UK and other left-hand-drive countries, it’s important to remember that traffic in Spain drives on the right. Roundabouts and junctions can feel unfamiliar at first, so extra care in the early stages makes a real difference. Helmets are compulsory, and checking insurance cover and rental terms before setting off is strongly advised.
Scooters are one of the quickest ways to reach beaches, beach clubs and inland restaurants, but other road users can sometimes behave unpredictably in high season. Maintaining distance, anticipating movements and avoiding rushed manoeuvres all help keep the ride smooth and safe.
With easy parking in most towns and access to scenic routes that larger vehicles can’t always navigate, scooters remain one of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to explore the two islands at your own pace, provided you ride with awareness and let the island set the rhythm.
