Profiling an island personality.

December's featured DJ is Dubliner Gustin, who arrived on Ibiza in 2015 following a six year stint plying his trade in Amsterdam.

Not only is Gustin on the books as a resident for The Soundgarden, but he A&Rs for onedotsixtwo and has multiple projects on the spin at any one time.

Describing his sound as "progressive, with a twist", the backbone of Gustin's musical identity has always been Progressive House, with diversions to Techno, Deep House and Electronica. He's also a DJ who revels in the extended set format, preferring to build a journey over several hours than a smash-and-grab 1.5 hour wonder.

Though for anyone intrigued enough to want a taster, we recommend his monthly Synchronicity radio show as a good starting point. October's show, from Alma Beach in Port des Torrent, can be listened to below.

In fact, his artist Soundcloud page is a treasure trove of recorded sets that deserve investment of your time. Just check out the recording from the recent ADE boat party as one goldbar example.

On Ibiza, home is tucked behind the airport "almost on the runway", he jokes. You might think that sounds like a hectic location to live, but Gustin loves it, citing its proximity to Sa Caleta and Las Salinas as ideal and close enough to either cycle or walk.

Perhaps its his Irish upbringing, the Dutch way of living rubbed-off or a combination of both, but it's clear that Gustin loves the outdoors and being in the fresh air - as evidenced, not only by his organic take on electronic music, but his newest venture: Streaming From Ibiza.

Ahead of a busy winter of touring and filming, we caught up with The Soundgarden protege to find out what he has planned.

Hi Gustin. We understand you’ve recently returned from Amsterdam Dance Event, which as we know was a little different to usual, with early finishes and mass testing for attendees. How did you find it?

"ADE is very special to me as I used to live in Amsterdam.

When I go back it’s like going back home. I have a huge affinity with the Dutch mentality, particularly their attitude to clubbing, which is very inclusive and diverse. With ADE and the melting pot of locals and visitors, it's even more special

This year was a little different as everything had to finish by midnight and a negative test was required for entry into venues. However, the system for testing was free and very efficient, with locations all over the city.

Most events got rescheduled to start earlier in the day, giving everyone their full value."

Sunlight broaches the The Soundgarden boat party at ADE

"I played on The Soundgarden boat party alongside Nick Warren and Unders, which was amazing. The vibe and energy on the boat was totally electric and everyone was totally up for it. Watt Events promoted the party as well as six other ADE events, including the amazing Nick Warren & Hernán Cattáneo back-to-back the day after, all of which were produced brilliantly."

You’ve been heavily involved with The Soundgarden camp for many years now. We had the pleasure of attending the party at Cova Santa earlier this summer - one of our highlights from 2021.

"I’ve been playing for them for about five years now and it has been nothing but a joy - a real dream come true. I’m resident for the events both here in Ibiza and globally, but I also help out with the record label behind the scenes.

Both Nick and Petra, The Soundgarden’s co-founder and creative director, are not only supportive but genuinely lovely people. We're very good friends first-and-foremost. They have also given me some amazing opportunities to grow and given me a huge amount of trust.

Nick is a great person. Even after so long at the top of his game, he remains a very humble guy, always up for a bit of banter with the fans. Both he and Petra have taught me a lot about the inner workings of the business side of the scene tooI'll be forever grateful."

"The party at Cova Santa was incredible. To have Nick and Hernán Cattáneo back playing together on the island after such a crazy 18 months felt like a sign we had turned the corner. They were fantastic as they always are - the energy was electric."

We can confirm it was palpable. We'll come back to Ibiza in a bit. We know you've got some UK gigs coming up this winter, starting with Joshua Brooks in Manchester next weekend.

"This is an interesting one, as Nick was already booked to play an all night long set in the club space at Joshua Brooks on that date. The venue has recently been fully remodelled and now comprises a bar and restaurant on the ground floor, with the club in the basement.

The promoters of the club and the owner of the restaurant, who I know from their time in Ibiza, decided that it would be great to put on a free pre-party ahead of Nick’s gig in the club, inviting me to play from 18:00 GMT to 23:00 GMT, when the club opens.

I’m really looking forward to it. I adore playing longer sets and it will also be my first time playing Manchester. It should be a great day and night. I’m also really looking forward to trying out the Cuban street food menu in the restaurant. That, and Nick’s all night long set as well of course!"

Then in Spring, you’re part of a huge Soundgarden line-up that takes over Invisible Wind Factory in Liverpool, featuring Guy J, Eelke Kleijn and Tripswitch as well as Nick.

"This one is really very close to my heart. As with a lot of things recently, it has been a long time coming. It was originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, so it is really exciting that it has finally been rescheduled.

It is the follow-up to an event at Constellations in Liverpool back in 2019, which was one of the best events I have ever played. 303 Events, the promoters on the ground, are some of my dearest friends."

"Already some five months before the event, there are people from all over Europe and as far away as South Africa, USA and Australia attending. That, coupled with the amazing line-up and a super friendly Liverpool crowd, make for a very special event all round.

I’m also currently planning a tour from South to North America, which will see me over that side of the world from mid January until mid March, all being well. After that, I get back to Ibiza, where I have a few things simmering!"

You tease! We can't wait to find out about your plans. We've naturally come back to Ibiza, so let's get stuck in. Away from the big clubs that everybody knows, Ibiza is full of understated gems. Are there any in particular that you recommend our readers checking out?

"I have to mention the beautiful Sunset Ashram at Cala Conta. I was fortunate enough to be a weekly resident there for two summers when I first moved to the island. The vibe there during and after sunset is perfect. It almost moves you to tears."

"Another interesting one I played, was at an amazing natural cave on private land near San Carlos a couple of years back. It's not the kind of place you get into without being invited, if you know what I mean.

That said, anything can happen if you are in the right place at the right time with the right people. That's one of the beauties of Ibiza I think

There is so much to discover on this island. Even after seven years living here, I'm still constantly finding new places."

Interesting that you mention San Carlos, since that's where Las Dalias new club space, Akasha is located. Have you been yet?

"Yeah, I went to see Eelke Kleijn play last week.

Akasha is a really positive new addition to the island. The timing couldn’t be better with the island's dancefloors finally being allowed to open again. The compact size of the venue makes it viable to have events there throughout winter season too.

Igor Marijuan is running bookings there and, if the first few weeks are anything to go by, we are in for a treat. They have done a really amazing job in creating a stunning looking, sounding and feeling space in what was previously quite a basic rectangular room.

I’m very excited to see how it progresses."

Another party you've been played for in the past, Ethereal, returns to Las Dalias on Sunday 5 December, making its debut at Akasha. For those that don't know, what is Ethereal all about?

"Ethereal fuses music, art and visual performances as one. Vito, the party's founder, is not only a close friend, but a visionary promoter. He and his team do this amazingly well. The vibe and spirit of the event really suit Ibiza and its early party heritage.

I really feel a part of something special when I play there. Now that we are free to dance again, Ethereal has some very exciting plans in the pipeline. The party at Las Dalias on Sunday 5 December will run from day into night, ending inside Akasha which is an exciting prospect."

We can't wait for that one. Finally, we had to talk to you about the exciting project you are fronting, Streaming From Ibiza. What is it all about?

"Streaming From Ibiza started as a reaction to the surge of livestreams during lockdown.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the advent of the DJ becoming a visual interest. I believe that the music is the most important thing, and generally, aside from a few air-punches and knob twiddles, there is not much to see when we're working.

However, I figured that if I was going to do the streaming thing, I wanted to make the primary focus the location and not the DJ, I also thought it would be a nice idea to share Ibiza with many people around the world who were not able to be here over the past couple of years.

Given the remoteness of Ibiza's landscape, I decided that I needed a mobile, silent power source so that we could literally film anywhere on the island. After some research, I found a new generation of battery power bank capable of powering a full set-up for long periods."

"I spoke to Mike Parry from Lucky Life about the idea. He's a very good friend of mine here on the island. He loved the concept and agreed to get involved using his experience in filming and editing.

So far we have released one stream which featured me playing a sunrise set on the top of Torre des Molar near San Miguel which is a watchtower from the 1700s that used to be used to lookout for incoming pirate boats that would regularly storm the island in the 18th Century.

We are currently planning the next shoot, which will be at another amazing location but this time during sunset. We are using YouTube as the main outlet for the project as it allows for HD video and also is more permanent than other social outlets.

We would love for your readers to check it out, subscribe to the channel and spread the word if they like what they see and hear."

The video looks great, Torre des Molar stunning and the music suitably uplifting. We look forward to see where you shoot from next. All the best with the project and the upcoming gigs.

Gustin plays the free Joshua Brooks pre-party in Manchester on Saturday 11 December. Tickets for Nick Warren all night long can be purchased here.
