Ibiza PlanE

Nearly everywhere you go in Ibiza at the moment you'll probably see one of the big billboards

Nearly everywhere you go in Ibiza at the moment you'll probably see one of the big billboards which announces that Central government money is being used to fund a project to help the economy.

PlanE, as it is known, is the state policy to reduce unemployment for the benefit of the community. The Government makes funds available and local councils have to bid for the cash to be used on suitable projects.

Since PlanE started, Ibiza has received over €22 million to fund 84 projects and generate work for 758 people. Now, the Government has announced a further tranche of €15 million for new projects which have to commence in January. The funds are split between the local authorities on the basis of population, so Ibiza town can call down the most funds - €5.2 million - and San Juan the least - €604,000.

There's a slightly different focus to the new funds – they must be used for projects promoting economic stability (science and business parks etc), the environment (water and energy saving schemes etc) and social schemes (cultural and sports schemes etc).

So come on Councils, think up a few more ways to spend us out of the crisis!
