What's an Italian appetizer? As opposed to the Spanish early afternoon tradition, 'tapas' are a thing of the evenings in Italy, before dinner, or even as a proper dinner. They are very popular, at least in the north of the country, and its origins date back to the 18th century, when Antonio Benedetto Carpano invented vermouth in Torino. To introduce this new drink in the market, he established the fad of serving food to go with it.
