Ibiza Winter Restaurants - Bistro Plaza, Santa Gertrudis

Beautiful French food, a piano and good old fashioned sophistication in beautiful Santa Gertrudis. Brand new Ibiza restaurant, Bistro Plaza impresses our reviewer.

Walking into Bistro Plaza in Santa Gertrudis one sunny Ibiza December lunchtime, it was difficult to believe that this restaurant had opened its doors just three short weeks ago. The piano in the corner, the lovely French background music, the nostalgic and rustic feel of the interior, plus a large number of happy-looking customers, and the whole place exuded the air of being already very well established.

Owners Charlie and Fabrice made us feel at home right away, and it being yet another bright and warm winter day on Ibiza, we decided to dine outside in the beautiful courtyard garden, surrounded by orange trees, palm trees and a whole host of well-tended plants.

Sophistication is the word that springs to mind, which is not surprising considering that Fabrice is a former vineyard owner who then went on to work at the Ministry of Culture in Paris. Our wine was served in a carafe, the bread was from Boulangerie de Notre in Paris, the crockery and cutlery polished and elegant.

Fabrice went through the extensive menu, expertly guiding and advising us. My dining companion, Ibiza Spotlight's Editor in Chief, Cat Milton, was obviously in an adventurous mood and couldn't decide between snails or mussels as a starter, which resulted in Fabrice bringing her a "small" portion of each, and tactfully demonstrating the correct way to eat the snails.

I must admit, I was intrigued to see how she would find these escargots, but she was more than impressed, describing them as "simple and earthy, but exquisite." The mussels were going down well too, so much so that she insisted I try one and my argument that I didn't like mussels appeared to be irrelevant. I reluctantly took one…and you know that moment when you realise that the boss is actually right? Yeah, that. Suffice to say, she was lucky that my onion soup, loaded with onions, garlic and with bread and melted cheese was keeping me so happy, otherwise I might have just helped myself to the lot.

Completely taken over by the French Bistro vibe, we both decided on a traditional tartare for our main course; Steak Tartare for Cat and Tuna Tartare for me. Colourful, light and extremely tasty, both were served with fresh, crisp salad and french fries. Utterly delicious.

Over our shared dessert - creme de citroen et chocolate blanc en mousse, which was like a tangy, spongy cheesecake - and excellent seasonal coffee (another of his passions) Fabrice came to chat with us…and we can tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there are plenty more exciting surprises planned at Bistro Plaza in the near future. We will, of course, update you when we know more.

We salute Charlie and Fabrice on creating such a warm and welcoming space, tasteful with a touch of retro, in which to enjoy premium, top quality food. Do go along, and make sure you mention that they were highly recommended by Ibiza Spotlight.
