Ibiza: We got the Power

We have the 'occasional' problems with the supply of electricity here in Ibiza

We have the 'occasional' problems with the supply of electricity here in Ibiza when the demand for power actually doubles in July and August compared to the rest of the year.

With hundreds of thousands of tourists all keeping cool under air-conditioning, using hair dryers and GHDs, charging up their i-phones and making refreshing cups of tea during the commercials, all it takes is a few drops of rain on an already overloaded system and it's lights out!

So some bright spark at the Spanish Electricity Network has come up with the idea of linking the Balearic Islands to the mainland to ensure continuous power in emergency situations such as unexpected fine drizzle or two hen parties getting ready to go out at the same time.

A cable will link Sagunto on the mainland to Santa Ponsa in Mallorca and then to Talamanca in Ibiza at a depth of 780 metres. The total budget for the whole job is €350 million and it 'should' be completed by the end of 2012.
