Every October, the Ibiza salt pans transform into a fascinating stage for the 'Fira de la Sal' (Salt Fair), a unique tourist and cultural event dedicated to celebrating the heritage and culture intertwined with traditional salt collection.
Scheduled for the weekend of 16 and 18 October, this event, set in in Sant Jordi de Ses Salines and the nearby Natural Park of Las Salinas, promises a rich array of activities that pay homage to the time-honoured practices associated with this ancient industry. It also emphasises the remarkable natural environment where these salt pans operate.
Starting with the ceremonial lighting of the Fogueró bonfire, the historical signal for salt harvesters to begin their work, visitors can enjoy live demonstrations of manual salt extraction, discovering age-old techniques that shaped the island's culture and heritage.
Food lovers can experience live showcooking sessions spotlighting Ibiza’s famous 'white gold', with traditional delicacies like ossos amb col and authentic salmorra brining demonstrations. Over in Sant Jordi’s village square, an artisan market will feature local handicrafts and regional produce.
The cultural lineup features dramatised tours of the Torre de la Sal Rossa, workshops, and spirited ball pagès folk dancing, while nature tours explore the salt flats' unique ecosystem.
