Review: Carnival at Sankeys

We check out Playa D'en Bossa's newest arrival, Sankeys Ibiza.

The Manchester clubbing institution that is Sankeys has branched out this summer to open its sister venue in Ibiza. Bringing over its underground house and techno night Carnival, it is now the place to be in Playa D'en Bossa on Wednesdays if you want to catch some of the UK's finest rising stars. The bookings are unique in that you won't yet find these DJ's playing the big rooms at Space or Amnesia, whereas they get the chance to shine at this medium-sized nightclub. Already this summer Sankeys Ibiza has welcomed Jordan Peak and Russ Yallop and names like Robert James and Laura Jones will be gracing the decks in the coming months. In addition to this a solid set of residents, completes the line up's each week.

This Wednesday saw Enzo Siragusa of Fuse London and Birmingham bred producer Subb-an join Butch for a night of underground debauchery. Kicking off proceedings Enzo, who is known for his loyal following, pulled the crowds in early and the main room was busy by 1am. His signature deep techno worked perfectly on the Void Acoustics sound system as you could literally feel the bass-line pulsating through you and the dancefloor could not contain its appreciation when he dropped his recent release ‘Sagamore'. In slightly odd programming Butch's harder techno took the middle set but Subb-an succeeded in keeping the attention as he brought the tempo down and moved into housier territory. His set featured a surprise live PA of ‘The Lover's Night' by Beckford and Jazz Fusic in a nod to Enzo, who then joined him back to back to end the night.

Many try and fail to break into the already saturated Ibiza nightclub scene each year, as they struggle to compete with the stiff competition put on by the superclubs each night. Although still early days, with the forward-thinking music policy of Carnival and very popular Monza on Thursdays, Sankeys look set to hold its ground.
