The ancient Romans called it Saturnalia, pagan druids marked the festival of Alban Arthan and modern Christianity celebrates Christmas. While the name, traditions and even deities may have changed, the constant linking them through the ages is their alignment with the winter solstice.
Today, 21 December, we've reached the shortest day of the calendar year.
From this point, the planet's tilt will gradually decrease while the hours of daylight starts increasing little by little, day by day, inching towards a warmer horizon. There may still be colder days ahead, but we're officially on the downhill slope to summer.
Being the shameless sun-worshippers that we are, that's something we can fully get behind. Let the countdown commence.
Already, we have a big talking point heading into next season. To get the ball rolling, Defected sprung us with a surprise announcement that few saw coming. While some predicted a departure from Pacha was likely, not many would have guessed Chinois as a potential suitor.
(For anybody interested, Defected's revelation landed a whole day earlier than the first piece of Ibiza 2025 news this time last year)
Surprises are rarely in short supply when it comes to Ibiza, so you're likely to believe us when we say the next one isn't very far around the corner. Unbelievably, there's even a chance the next bombshell drops before Christmas. Stay tuned.
Whilst we won't drag your attention too far from your nearest and dearest this Christmas, remember that you can keep up to date with all the latest gossip (before it gets confirmed or denied...) by signing up to our forum. What rumours have you heard on the grapevine?
While summer may still feel like an unfair distance away, we have our New Year's party schedule to look forward to in the next fortnight. Before we know it, we'll be welcoming in 2026.
We imagine most of you reading this will soon be joining us in following in our forebears' footsteps by celebrating this special time of year. Just like the civilisations that came before us, we'll observe this spiritual period with feasting and dance.
'Tis the season of rejoicing and goodwill to all mankind!
From everyone at Ibiza Spotlight, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We'll catch you on the flippity-flip at the start of 2026 when the frequency of announcements will really start to pick up pace. To stay up to date with the latest news, follow our social channels and bookmark our magazine homepage.
