"€1 for the environment" - Ibiza Preservation Fund

"€1 for the environment" - a new initiative by Ibiza Preservation Fund to help safe-guard Ibiza's natural beauty.

Set up in 2008 by Will Aitken, Serena Cook and Ben Goldsmith, Ibiza Preservation Fund is dedicated to creating an environmentally sustainable future for Ibiza and Formentera, as well as working towards preserving the idyllic natural beauty of both islands.

Ibiza was granted World Heritage Status in 1999, due to its cultural and historical importance, and is home to a large number of rare species (some actually unique to the island), and both Ibiza and its surrounding waters give refuge to migratory birds and marine life.

The Ibiza Preservation Fund raises money from people all over the world who care about the future of Ibiza and Formentera. These funds are then used to support cutting-edge sustainability initiatives by local organisations or various other Spanish groups who are influential in policies that affect the islands.

Obviously, Ibiza comes under colossal pressure every summer with the arrival of millions of tourists, and the aim of Ibiza Preservation Fund is to allow this mass tourism to co-exist harmoniously with the preservation and nurturing of the island's unique cultural and environmental heritage.

This summer, visitors to Ibiza will have the opportunity to contribute towards the preservation of the environment simply by dining at one of the island's restaurants! The brainchild of Jonathan Thorogood, owner of El Chirnguito and SACCA (formerly Aura), the initiative involves a donation of €1 being automatically added to the bill of participating customers at the end of each meal. The funds raised will support environmental projects, such as the protection of the endangered marine Posidonia, the promotion of agriculture and renewable energy, and opposition to prospective oil rigs, and will be evaluated and monitored by the Ibiza Preservation Fund.

Other restaurants to have joined the initiative are La Paloma, Nagai, Cicale and Can Guimo, and any other establishments on Ibiza or Formentera wishing to participate should contact sandra@ibizapreservationfund.org.

So, whilst enjoying your holiday on this beautiful island, why not consider contributing to the "€1 for the environment" initiative...after all, all you have to do is treat yourself to a great meal!
