Medical Advances in Ibiza

Ibiza has an excellent public health service based around the small hospital of Can Misses

Ibiza has an excellent public health service based around the small hospital of Can Misses where waiting times are on average around 30 days. However like other small hospitals certain types of specialist treatment are just not available and patients are obliged to make long, inconvenient journeys to the big cities of Valencia, Barcelona and Palma and their big teaching hospitals.

News has just arrived of a groundbreaking system where the treatment comes to the patient all thanks to the Internet. A system called 'teleictus' allows specialists in Mallorca's Son Dureta Hospital to guide emergency staff in Ibiza through the correct procedures to treat patients who have had a stroke.

This is the first time this system has ever been used in Spain, and in the whole of Europe only Germany has a similar system. Not only will it make life easier for patients and staff in Ibiza but it will also save lives! Strokes affect about 200 people per year in Ibiza and are the primary cause of death amongst women and the third amongst men. Great news and even better that 'teleictus' is available 24-hours-a-day.
