€7.1 million, a record!

The arrival of cruise liners in the Balearic Islands generates so much money that a big meeting of all parties involved – cruise lines, politicians and chambers of commerce – has been held in Palma to map out the best ways to promote and encourage them.

The Balearic Cruise Forum 2012 was told that the economic impact of cruise liners arriving in Ibiza last year was around €7.1 million, a record! The figures are calculated using a formula which is based on the number of passengers per ship and the level of luxury of the cruise. The more luxurious the ship, the more money it's passengers spend.

However, to put these figures into perspective, the port of Palma de Mallorca generated €110.9 million in the same period. Obviously it's a much bigger port and attracts many more ships – on certain days five giant cruisers and over 20,000 passengers can be in the city – but the majority of the income, €64.7 million, comes from supplying the ships with fuel, food and other supplies, something which doesn't happen in Ibiza.
