September escape: Hacienda Na Xamena embraces Ibiza's quieter side

A secluded cliff-top retreat for a slower-paced Ibiza experience.

September has a different rhythm in Ibiza. Temperatures become more comfortable, the busiest beaches begin to quieten and there is still plenty of time for leisure activities, water sports, long lunches and exploring the island before the season draws to a close.

One place particularly suited to that change of pace is Hacienda Na Xamena. Perched 180 metres above the Mediterranean in the north of the island, the hotel sits among the rugged landscape of Na Xamena, away from the busier resorts.

Founded in 1969 by Belgian architect Daniel Lipszyc, Hacienda Na Xamena has become one of the island's best-known cliff-top hotels, occupying a secluded position above the Mediterranean in the north of Ibiza.

Today, the appeal remains rooted in its surroundings. Rooms and suites look towards the Mediterranean, while the hotel's elevated position makes the landscape as much a part of the experience as the accommodation itself.

Time to slow down

Ask any Ibiza insider and they'll tell you that September is one of the best months for exploring Ibiza. The days remain long and the sea is still warm enough for swimming, while the island's roads, beaches and villages are far less hectic than during the height of summer.

At Hacienda Na Xamena, that sense of dolce far niente is particularly easy to embrace. A day can revolve around breakfast, the pool, a book and the changing light over the northern coastline rather than a packed itinerary.

For a hotel so deeply connected to its natural setting, there could hardly be a better approach.

Suspended over the sea

The hotel's Spa La Posidonia is home to its best-known wellness experience: the Suspended Waterfalls.

The outdoor circuit comprises eight hydrotherapy pools built into the cliff, creating an experience that is difficult to replicate anywhere else on Ibiza. Suspended high above the sea, the pools look out across dazzling views of the deep blue Mediterranean far below.

The spa also offers massages, facial and body treatments and other wellness experiences, all designed for those seeking to slow down, switch off and simply be in the moment.

Dinner above the Mediterranean

Dining is another essential part of the experience. At Restaurante Edén, Mediterranean cooking is rooted in Ibiza, with seasonal fish from the island's markets and vegetables and herbs from the hotel's own garden, while traditional local flavours are given a contemporary twist.

The Nests are three private circular structures perched at the highest point of the property, created for dining and drinks high above the Mediterranean. Their elevated position makes them an especially striking spot for sunset, with the sea stretching out below as the day draws to a close.

And that is perhaps the strongest argument for visiting Ibiza in September: there is still plenty happening, but it becomes easier to appreciate the island without trying to fit everything into a single day.

From the beaches and restaurants to the villages, markets, countryside and coastline, September offers the chance to experience a familiar Ibiza at a slightly gentler pace.

For those who want to go one step further, Hacienda Na Xamena provides a place to retreat afterwards – high above the sea, surrounded by nature and far removed from the busiest parts of the island.
