Caught in the moment | MËSTIZA at Hï Ibiza

A snapshot from The Theatre's dancefloor on 30 May.

This weekend’s scorching sunshine wasn’t the only heatwave forecast to land on Ibiza. On Friday night, Spanish chicas MËSTIZA set Hï Ibiza ablaze with their feverishly hot Latin-fuelled electronica on a scale of glamour and grandeur I’m not sure The Theatre has seen before.

For those in the know (or anyone not living under a rock!) Friday night was also the sold-out opening party of a certain sister-club on Ibiza. To compete for the crowds on this particular night required balls of steel.

I’m pleased to report such worries were unfounded. MËSTIZA’s cult following proved their allegiance in numbers.

Any extra breathing space was a welcomed bonus. Let’s be honest, when those Latin beats kick in, you need all the space you can for the uncontrollable outbursts of hip-winding moves, which this crowd took full advantage of.

For the fifth instalment of MËSTIZA’s seven-week run, Haitian DJ and producer Francis Mercier was assigned warm-up duties. After a quick scout around the club, we found the perfect booth side spot just as his hypnotic voyage of Afro House and cross-continental rhythms began.

Losing ourselves in the enchantment of it all, we hardly noticed the clock striking 03:30 and it being time to hand over to MËSTIZA themselves. However, this was not your usual DJ-to-DJ exchange. No, our party hosts had something spectacular in mind for their entrance.

A sudden blackout and dramatic crescendo signalled MËSTIZA’s ceremonial arrival. Choir singers stood proud on either side of the stage, and we watched on in suspense as MËSTIZA walked side-by-side through the crowd on a sacred procession to the DJ booth.

It was in this moment that the two Spanish heroines, tailored in sexy chrome outfits and signature fedoras and shades, christened the night with unapologetic majesty and bold female empowerment. The tone was set.

In deep sonic synergy, MËSTIZA’s Pitty and Belah set to work honouring their roots with feisty Latin-infused House and Melodic Techno.

The duo's latest work of art, Rintintin, which had only dropped seven days earlier, already commanded an adoring fan reaction with its organic instrumental textures, charming and catchy vocals, and warbling bass.

From here on in, the girls cast their net wide, drawing on a worldwide influences of Arabic and Eastern sounds, all the while driving a strong undercurrent of tenacious Tech beats that kept hands in the air until the final moments.

Female talent is steadily climbing the ranks of Ibiza’s super-club line-ups each year. Although there's still progress to be made when it comes to equalising the playing field, parties like this prove that change is in motion.

As the first female duo to hold residency at Hï Ibiza, MËSTIZA haven’t just filled the Friday night slot, they owned it - and with intimidating force. We love to see it!

With trailblazers like MËSTIZA leading the charge and embodying the change we want to see, Ibiza’s clubbing future looks loud, bright and unmistakably feminine.
