Three doggy tales from Ibiza

Three doggy tales from Ibiza.

There seems to be an abundance of stray dogs on the island and many of them end up in the council's kennels in Sa Coma. The policy there is to never put down a healthy animal but to try to re-home it and last year 132 dogs found new homes, 72 were reclaimed by their owners and 153 went to another animal protection centre.

The annual dog agility competition was held this weekend and about 200 dogs were put through their paces jumping through hoops, running through tunnels and dodging round sticks. There was even a display of obedience and agility by two dogs specially brought over from England.

The Royal Spanish Canine Society is considering whether Ibiza should be the home of the official headquarters of the society for the Ca Eivissenc. More commonly known as the Podenco, this graceful hunting dog was brought to Ibiza thousands of years ago by some of the island's many invaders and has remained as a symbol of the island ever since.
