The West of the
island, beneath San Antonio, is a beautiful area of the island to explore. The stunning beaches of Cala Conta and Cala Bassa and the surrounding scrubby forests of pines are ideal for long winter
walks. The water is said to be the cleanest on the island due to the continual currents, and the sun and the sea combine here to give you the most spectacular and colourful sunsets imaginable.
There
is also a well-preserved pirate tower at Cala Conta. Almost 250 years old, this tower is one of a ring of such towers, surrounding the island. Each was within sight of the next, and they formed a
warning system to alert the islanders of approaching pirate ships.
The highest point of the island can be reached by foot or car (or for the fit amongst you, by bike!). The dirt track which leads to the summit winds through fields adorned with flowers, bordered by those typical ibicencan stone walls. Fig trees, olive trees, almond trees, and hardly a building in sight to spoil the view. Be careful of the odd car driving up and down the lane.
The view from the top is simply breathtaking. From the Bay of San Antonio to the medieval cathedral of Ibiza Town, the entire island is laid out before you.
Afterwards return back to the village and sit in the winter sunshine whilst relaxing over a beer or coffee in one of the cafes.
Built in the 7th Century by Phoenician miners in search of metals. Excavated between the late 1980s and early 1990s. The settlement is located between the pebble beach of Es Codolar and the bay of Cala Jondal, on the way to Bol Nou.
The architecture of the dwellings is a curious mixture of the irregular and more ordered construction. You can also see the remains of a bread oven.
In the winter months there are still some top class restaurants around the San Jose area for you to try here are a couple of suggestions;
Cas Mila Restaurant: beautiful views and beautiful food - nothing more to say! Open at weekends.
Ca Na Sofia: You couldn't get any closer to the beach than this restaurant! Find it at Cala Vadella open from 4.12. Closed some evenings in winter (mon/tues) so do phone first.
