Preview: Cocoon 2011

Now in it's 12th year, Papa Sven and co. return to Amnesia to celebrate Cocoon Heroes!

World famous techno label Cocoon opened its weekly summer residency at Amnesia this Monday.  Running since 2000, it has grown to become one of the most popular nights on the island, attracting the most in demand DJ’s from across the globe.  Announcing Cocoon Heroes as the concept for its 12th season, this year is all about celebrating not only the DJ’s, but you, me, and everyone else that makes the party the success it is.

The opening is always a highly anticipated affair and Papa Sven billed none other than Ricardo Villalobos to headline the Terrace.  After an energetic warm up from Dorian Paic, Villalobos rocked the packed dancefloor with an eclectic set, which traversed everything from stripped down minimal to vocal house tracks.  Over in the Main Room hard, thumping, beats came courtesy of Sacsha Dive, before handing over to Sven himself for the final hours.  Although of course the night didn’t stop there, over at pool party destination Punta Arabi, Sven and team continued on well into Tuesday to an ever fervent crowd.

The party continues this week with a particularly strong line-up.  Villalobos will grace the Terrace once again, this time with the aid of Marco Carola, whose high energy always pulls in a particularly zealous crowd.  While in the Main Room M-inus boss Ritchie Hawtin will appear after techno-meets-disco connoisseur Jamie Jones.  Other standout dates throughout the season include all night long sets from Sven Vath and Loco Dice on 18th July, in the Main Room and Terrace respectively.  Live performances will come from Desolat’s Martin Buttrich, as well as Spanish duo Pulshar and the multi-talented Guti.  For a taste of Detroit check out Carl Craig and Kyle Hall on 11th July, while Nina Kraviz and Seth Troxler on 12th September is likely to be a highlight of the season.  The closing party on 26th September will no doubt be another Amnesia spectacular, with Vath, Dice, Villalobos, Raresh and more on the line-up, causing Cocoon frenzy in Ibiza one last time for 2011.

I was quite surprised how quiet the opening party was and that it finished at 6:30am last week. It was a pleasant surprise though plenty space to move about and dance, although the early finish was a bit annoying going on previous years. I thought Sven was quality though it was a lot harder than I've heard him play the past 3 years at amnesia. Was not a massive fan of the fairy hands in the air stuff at the end of the night though, leave that for the trancers at cream.

I was starting to lose a little faith in sven recently myself, (though his tune selection was getting a bit booring) but saw him a few weeks ago and he was absolutely brilliant

i think the djs booked are the most popular right now, not the best, i'd like to see them return to better sounds and book djs that play music with a bit more attitude -

Dj Hell, Ellen Allien, Robert Hood, Extrawelt, Ar'Pi'Ar and more Hawtin / M_nus nights...

Djs like Marco Carola and Adam Beyer bore me tears with the music they play these days.

Just my opinion, i'm bored with the music they play now, sounds too laid back and samey. I much prefer the upfront tech house and techno that you get from Carl Cox...
