Spotlight: How was 2009 been for you? What have been the high and low points?
Riva Starr: It was been amazing. The low point has been all the waiting for my album thing to start and the high point is everything from my first single release on!!!
You have a forthcoming artist album in January right? Tell us a bit about the idea behind the album?
Correct, January 25th on Made To Play. The idea behind my album was just to collect 11 tunes that could represent me and my dj style. It’s not just house, there are a few electro (80’s definition of electro) and breakish tunes as well... It’s something that you can put on your cd player and dance from the start to the end. Re my influences, you can tell they are quite wide if you listen to the whole cd, they go from hiphop to 80’s electro to jazz to worldsounds to Chicago house... I’m a great music listener so it’s quite natural for me to add a touch of my musical background to my productions.
What interests you about dance music culture at the moment? And what don’t you like?
I like the great enthusiasm of the new generations and the fact that the crossover appproach to the genres is widely adopted lately... That’s always been my philosophy so I feel happy about it..
Open minded producers for openminded people. I don’t like to spend time in the airports.
Going into a new decade, which artists and albums have you enjoyed listening to in the last 10 years.
Wow there are too many couldn’t tell just one. But I like to mention Rage Against The Machine’s albums also because of their recent charity campaign, big up!
What are your plans for and hopes for 2010 and beyond?
Gigging heavily all around the world and promoting my new album, future projects for 2010 are a double compilation In The House Miami for Defected, a few remixes for Reboot, Xpress2, Dennis Ferrer etc... And FINALLY the launch of my label SNATCH! Get ready it’s gonna be BANG!
