Acid House Documentary: 'High on Hope'

High on Hope is a documentary charting the legendary raves that took place in England in the 1980s, specifically near Blackburn, Lancashire.

It was a revolution, no doubt, and we're still riding the crest of the waves made by our acid house forefathers. Blackburn was one of the places making most waves and to those in the know will always be remembered as a stronghold of the acid house spirit.

We stumbled across this documentary by a chap called Piers Sanderson, which charts the scene in Blackburn, by speaking to the key players at the time and using some extremely rare footage.

As we speak, the film is unable to go to be released due to licencing problems with the soundtrack, in fact, simply that the cost of obtaining the licences for the music is prohibitive. Anyone up for a fundraiser??!

Anyway, this trailer brought a smile to my face and below you can read a recent interview with Piers Sanderson, in which he explains how the film was made.

Lets hope the difficultie can be overcome to complete the project.

Brought back a lot of fond memories for me(and one or two not-so-fond!). We used to meet up at a little club called Monroe's in Great Harwood between Blackburn and Accrington. There were always hundreds more people in the car park than there were in the club! I had one of the best nights of my life at a warehouse in Accrington, dancing all night and then being allowed to leave peacefully by the police.:D

A few weeks later, after the tabloids had whipped up the authorities into an absolute frenzy, we were at an illegal rave in a warehouse in Nelson. People were starting to leave when the police charged in through the only set of double doors with batons ready, screaming what could only be described as "battle-cries", and were supported by mounted police and dogs. I escaped with five stitches in the back of my head and a concussion, my brother with a badly gashed mouth and a few smashed teeth.

On Granada Reports and Look NorthWest that evening it showed nothing like that, just a few wide-eyed ravers fighting to free themselves from the melee and a few stones being thrown.

Might be worth a look when it's out
I watched this at the Curzon cinema on Shaftesbury Avenue last year as part of the "DJ Flicks" series. Really good doc narrated I think by Piers Sanderson with first hand accounts of the parties, the organisation behind them and the police brutality which wasn't reported at all in the wider media. Was quite moving at times.
