The Ibiza Hoteliers association have elected a new president for the next two years

The Ibiza Hoteliers association have elected a new president for the next two years. He's Roberto Hortensius from the Hotel Osiris in San Antonio bay and takes over from outgoing president Pedro Matutes.

The meeting to elect him was one of the most well attended for years, with 80 hotel bosses present to cast their vote. Though the season is one of the best for years and is forecast to get better, the hoteliers still have many concerns. With the ever increasing shift away from package holidays to independent travel they consider it an 'embarrassment' that there is no bus service from the airport to the main resorts of San Antonio and Santa Eulalia.

And we certainly agree with them here. It is an irony that some people spend more on a taxi from the airport than they have paid for their flight from Britain and the transport authorities seriously need to rethink their strategies.

Figures just published show an almost 6% increase on hotel occupancy in June this year over the same period in 2005 - a reflection of the increased number of reservations from Britain and Germany, and strangely a large increase in Italian visitors, who normally only arrive in July and August. The airport reports an amazing 11% increase in passenger numbers landing during the coming week and significant increases for the rest of the year.

So with a good season in prospect the hotels still need to carry on with the tremendous improvements they have made over the last few years and not sit relaxing on their laurels.
