Ibiza Promenades and Discos

Perhaps one of the most important meetings of San Antonio town council for years

Perhaps one of the most important meetings of San Antonio town council for years took place here in Ibiza this week. Two major decisions with far reaching effects were taken and passed by the councillors.

The new promenade from San Antonio town centre to Cala Gracioneta will finally be constructed. Frozen since the year 2000, the project will at last get underway in October and cost €4.5 million.

There will be two distinct parts to the ‘paseo,’ the first stretch, running past the famous sunset strips to Cala des Moro will be paved to a width of six metres. The last part up to the lovely little cove of Cala Gracioneta will have a much more ‘rustic’ look and will probably be a wooden boardwalk as it traverses some quite rocky coastline.

The second measure taken at the meeting was to increase the amount of the penalty to be levied on the four big discos in San Antonio for closing late. The council is trying to enforce the licensing laws for the discos in order to prevent 24-hour-a-day clubbing with punters leaving the big discos en masse and heading for ‘after hours’ clubs. Previously the fine of €150 did little to encourage the discos to comply with the law, now at €3000 for every extra hour open beyond the official time the clubs may just think twice.
