The rehabilitation of sa Penya, the old fisherman's quarter of Ibiza town, has begun at last. Demolition experts will move in this week to remove all traces of buildings which are in ruins due to neglect, and also structures which have been erected illegally. Originally envisaged in the Reform Plan of 1992 delays have occurred because special Judicial permissions have been required to eject 'Okupas' or squatters who have moved into unoccupied buildings, and where extra storeys have been put on existing buildings without permission. There is also, running concurrently with this programme of reform, a system of grant aid for owners to spruce up and improve the facade of their building. We think this is an excellent plan for the area to reach its full potential as both a place to live and to attract tourists, just like other areas such as the Albaicin in Granada or the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba!
