Ibiza on tour | Drumcode at WHP19

Saturday 19 October at Mayfield Depot, Manchester, UK.

Club-wise, Ibiza is on sabbatical now until early May 2020, with the exception of this imaginative mass of Halloween parties. However, its influence continues elsewhere in the world.

During the low season, we bring you club reviews from Ibiza favourites at other party destinations from around the globe.

First up, we headed to WHP (The Warehouse Project) to check-out Manchester's newest venue, Mayfield Depot. Adam Beyer's all-conquering Drumcode were in town. Here's what we thought.


From Stockholm to the world via Ibiza

Drumcode never stops. Fronted by adopted islander Adam Beyer, the techno superbrand is fast closing in on a quarter of a century of activity. During that time, it has taken its patented sound across the world and amassed a diehard following in the millions.

While the label has only had an official presence on Ibiza for the past two summers (and even then, only a single date per year), for Adam, wife Ida and their young family, the island is their year-round home.

Though the Ibiza clubbing season may be closed for another year, the Drumcode faithful continue to support the label and party series in other territories.

Off the back of the annual skirmish to ADE, Manchester was next on the route. Specifically WHP's new home, The Depot at Mayfield.

Windows may be frosting and bodies may be shivering, but Beyer's techno cult knows exactly how to fire up the dance floor. For this 2019 WHP edition, Drumcode set the three-staged, 10,000 capacity inner-city space proverbially ablaze.

Having made our way through The Depot at Mayfield's grand entrance, we were funnelled with the hordes of techno hungry revellers towards the belly of the former coach station.

All eager to hear that Drumcode sound, the super-label's distinctive branding illuminated our passage.

The likes of Pan-Pot, Monika Kruse, Maya Jane Coles and Maceo Plex were all on hand to assist Adam Beyer.

Upon entering the main music arena, it was Ida Engberg who was holding down the largest of the rooms. Instead, we opted for an early-evening Victor Ruiz session in the more intimate Archive.

Twelve hours may sound a lot, but with almost 20 artists on the bill, pacing ourselves was not an option.

South American Ruiz is known for his brain-melting style, gravitating towards selections with unrelenting power. Soon after the above, he went for fellow Brazilian ANNA's remix of Jon Hopkin's Singularity that had the room rumbling.

Bringing the fire, Ruiz claimed his fair share of heads on this night.


The Depot

Although dearly loved, WHP's former home, Store Street, created uncomfortable clubbing memories for many in this part of the world.

Despite the fabulous memories it has given the city, the salient fact remains the North West's largest underground promoters simply outgrew it.

Now with this bumper capacity at disposal, the days of tickets being gold dust are resigned to the past. The Depot's vast space has allowed clubbing superpower WHP to place further emphasis on festival-sized line-ups from the biggest promotions in the scene.

Moving on to the gargantuan main room, The Depot has an authentic industrial aesthetic. With space to the sides and back, the bodies were in the middle and it was time to be a part of it. Drumcode protege Enrico Sangiuliano controlled the pit, limb-by-limb, beat-by-beat.

We can understand why he has become a regular on the label and a reliable pair of hands at the events. Here, his own productions yet again ruled proceedings.

Away from his world-class skills in the studio, Enrico knows how to dig deep in his crate to create an atmosphere. The vibe? Dark, dirty and dangerous. WHP at its raw best.

Following an outstanding contribution from Enrico, the boss arrived, ready to take this WHP takeover to its crescendo. Enter Adam Beyer.


Closing The Depot with Adam Beyer

Beyer started heavy. Acid heavy. Techno heavy. Maybe there was even some trance in there, who knows? This was Beyer at his breathtaking best, rattling the cage and sending hands to heads.

A first outing on the label from Rebūke shook the pillars, before some Sweet Dream's bootleg madness.

With Adam Beyer on exceptional form, this was Drumcode beating itself into the walls of WHP's new home. A night for the true techno heads, the finalising memory of the party would be this outstanding remix.

No rest for the wicked, Drumcode continued its UK assault a week later at its annual Halloween haunting at Tobacco Dock in London. Next up, Adam Beyer takes Drumcode across the pond to New York on 8 November, before a Christmas party in Dortmund, Germany.
