THE VENUE

Ample 32 occupies a special place in the hearts of the people of San Antonio, serving up traditional Ibizan food with a modern twist for the resort's inhabitants and visitors for decades.

Having moved to the Blau Parc Aparthotel, this reputation has only been amplified with a location that's at the end of the Sunset Strip, offering more space and spectacular bay views. With tables arranged on an outside viewing platform, overlooking the promenade and the popular little beach of Caló des Moro, the restaurant offers its clients a uniquely elevated view of the glittering sea, sky and the sunsets, which always leave an indelible impression.

As the sun drops towards the horizon on a summer evening, it is genuine pleasure to enjoy a cold drink, while surveying the scene and making your choice from a menu that's chock-full of Mediterranean delights. There are no major surprises on the card, just a selection of the typical meat and seafood dishes you would expect to find on a traditional Ibizan menu, but prepared and plated with an extra dash of panache.

Ample 32 is decorated and furnished in a contemporary style and always meticulously presented inside and out. It is staffed by a team of enthusiastic waiters who are more than happy to run the extra yards up and down the stairs to attend to your needs.

Clockwise from left: Cured slices of Ibérico ham, tomato topped cristal bread, a mango salad and an octopus and prawn dish

The local staple of finely sliced Ibérico ham, with delightfully crispy cristal bread and Ibizan tomatoes, is always a great way to start any meal, as everyone almost always tucks in hungrily to this treat. We were given a large sharing plateful, along with a portion of incredibly soft, buttery slices of octopus tentacles with large juicy prawns.

Next up, a mountainous mango salad with avocado, crispy bacon and yet more gigantic prawns took centre stage. The salad was beautifully dressed, with the addition of blueberries to complement the drizzle of cocktail sauce and droplets of sweet chilli.

A spectacular mango salad

We got our meal up and running with a prawn appetiser and couple of bottles of the head waiter's wine recommendation, Valdubón Rueda Verdejo, which put us in a very good mood. This light, crisp white, reminiscent of orchard fruits like apples and pears, was the perfect Spanish summer evening freshener. Crisp and dry on the palate, it went down very harmoniously with every dish we ordered.

During the main course, seafood was represented by firm chucks of monkfish tail, with clams and potatoes in a rich saffron sauce. While the meat eaters indulged in an eye-wateringly large T-bone steak and some baby lamb chops, typical in Ibiza. Local lamb is on the smaller side though there are plenty of chops and lots of taste. Both dishes were served with a selection of grilled vegetables and thinly sliced chips.

Juicy and succulent: the T-bone steak

Replete after such a spread, we had very had little space left for dessert. Nevertheless we were presented with an enticing liquid-centred chocolate coulant, with mango ice cream, but we could only jab half-heartedly at it with our spoons. Leaving Ample 32 hungry really is not an option

If you're travelling out of season, Ample 32 is a great choice for lunch as it remains open all year and offers excellent value daily menus throughout the winter. Renowned for their very generous portions, the owners are also enthusiastic participants in the the resort's gastronomic feativals, Restaurat and Pintxo San Antonio, winning Restaurat a few yeara ago after wowing the judges with the use of that year's star ingredient of dried fruit. This takes a lot of talent.

In summary, Ample 32 represents good honest food, prepared with care and served in abundance, in a beautiful venue with superb views.
